1. Grab a slice at Luna Pizza

For a delicious and satisfying bite, Luna Pizza is a must-visit spot in Raleigh. “Tucked in the heart of downtown Clayton, the new Luna Pizza is becoming a local favorite known for its wood-fired pies made in an imported oven that heats to 700 degrees,” Jami Amidon explains.

“You can expect imported Italian flours to make the crust and fresh ingredients of high quality. The atmosphere is welcoming and tasteful, you won’t find a TV in the dining room next to a plastic salad bar. With a menu that balances classic Italian flavors and creative twists, every bite is a delicious experience.”

2. Stroll along the Art to Heart Trail

The Art to Heart Trail is a beautiful, art-filled walking and biking path. “One of Raleigh’s most inspiring hidden gems is the Art to Heart Trail, a scenic six-mile stretch connecting the North Carolina Museum of Art to downtown,” Victoria Sosa, chief marketing officer of Hodge & Kittrell Sotheby’s International Realty, details.

“Whether you’re biking, running, or just taking a peaceful stroll, this path winds through some of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods, green spaces, and public art — offering a perfect snapshot of why so many fall in love with Raleigh.”

3. Grab a brew at Salty Turtle Beer Co.

Take a break from exploring and grab a drink, either alcoholic or non-alcoholic, at this local joint. “The Carolina Coast meets the City of Oaks. STBC is stoked to be serving Raleigh. Featuring 14 beers on draft, our tasting room and beer garden offer plenty of wine, cider, and non-alcoholic options for guests of all tastes,” Daniel Callender, co-founder and general manager of Salty Turtle Beer Co., shares.

“We’re already surrounded by neighboring restaurants with lots of delicious options for folks to enjoy while they sip. Regular weekly events will include STBC stand-bys like run club & cycling club, but locals & tourists alike can expect much more to come. Cheers to North Carolina Craft Beer.”

4. Experience The Rialto Theatre

This vintage movie theater has been a Raleigh staple since 1942, offering a unique cinematic experience. With its art deco design and intimate setting, The Rialto frequently screens independent films, cult classics, and live performances.

5. Get some fresh air at North Hills Park

“If you’ve already visited other parks in Raleigh like Dorothea Dix or Pullen Park and are still craving some outdoor time, North Hills Park is a lovely neighborhood park to spend some time at,” Tegan George with Why Not Walk recommends.

“Located at Chowan Circle in the Midtown area, it has a variety of recreational amenities, including a lighted baseball field for tossing around a Frisbee or checking out some Little League, tennis and pickleball courts, picnic space, and a playground if you have little ones with you. Our favorite thing about the park, though, is that it’s connected to the Crabtree Greenway, which provides additional trails for hiking and biking. This greenway segment is a 1/4 mile of steeply sloped paved pathway linking the park to nearby neighborhoods and is a quiet and scenic option for those who want to get their steps in before checking out some of Raleigh’s amazing breweries and dining options.”

6. Indulge at Videri Chocolate Factory

Chocolate lovers, rejoice. “Nestled in Raleigh’s Warehouse District, Videri Chocolate Factory is a haven for chocolate enthusiasts,” Kevin Labianco, founder of Plantrip, shares. “This bean-to-bar chocolate factory offers visitors a chance to observe the chocolate-making process firsthand, indulge in artisanal confections, and savor rich hot chocolates in their cozy café. “Their menu proudly features partnerships with local businesses, including Carrboro Coffee, Strong Arm Baking Company, and Freshly Baked by Meg to bring customers a wide variety of just-sweet-enough lattes, fresh baked goods, and artisanal sandwiches.

The café features a rotating art gallery showcasing local artists, which customers can admire from ample seating available indoors and on their patio. Looking for more of an after-work hang-out spot? 9. Savor authentic food at Dos Taquitos

Foodies can discover delicious flavors by stopping into Dos Taquitos when visiting Raleigh. “Dos Taquitos is more than just a restaurant — it’s an immersive journey into the heart of Mexico, where every detail transports you far from the ordinary. The moment you step inside, rustic terra cotta walls, hand-painted murals, and the warm aroma of sizzling authentic cuisine create a vibrant atmosphere that feels like a hidden marketplace south of the border,” Andy Harrell with Carolina Living Associates recommends.

“Each carefully crafted dish tells a story, from street-style tacos bursting with slow-roasted meats to complex mole sauces that carry the depth of generations of culinary tradition. The gentle soundtrack of mariachi-inspired melodies and the passionate preparation of food elevate the dining experience beyond a simple meal to a full sensory adventure. At Dos Taquitos, you don’t just eat — you explore, you feel, and you connect with the rich, vibrant spirit of Mexican cuisine.”

The post How to Take Shelter in Your Apartment During a Tornado appeared first on The Rent. Blog : A Renter’s Guide for Tips & Advice.

]]>
When tornado season arrives, typically between April and July, every apartment resident needs to know where to go in a tornado.

Tornadoes don’t always come with a warning, and the worst of them can pack wind speeds of more than 300 miles per hour — tearing a home or building from its foundation. If you don’t have a basement, the natural question is where should you go during a tornado? How can you create a tornado shelter right in your own apartment?

knowing what to do during a tornado warning and avoid potential flying debris is imperative. The national weather service offers guidelines

Where to take shelter in your apartment during a tornado

Let’s review tornado safety for apartment dwellers, from where to take shelter during a tornado to what to do in your apartment during a tornado.

Where in your apartment complex should you take shelter during a tornado? Here are some basic safety tips:

Take cover as close to the ground as possible

The safest place to go in a tornado is always down — down in a basement, the first floor or a covered parking garage on the ground floor. If you live on the ground floor, great! If not, get to the lowest level of your apartment building immediately.

Apartment dwellers on higher floors should seek similar shelter. If there aren’t any options below ground, a neighbor’s ground-floor unit is the safest bet.

Also, if you live in a building with interior stairwells, you can go to the lowest floor and under the stairs to hide in a tornado.

Finding an interior hallway or just the lowest floor in your apartment building is safe during a tornado watch because these areas withstand winds

Pick your next best option — hide away from windows

If the storm is bearing down on your apartment complex, a tornado warning is in action — or you can’t go underground — the next safest place to seek shelter during a tornado is the furthest from the windows. This way you avoid the potential of flying debris. Choose an interior room, closet or hallway for a temporary tornado shelter.

Bathrooms are often considered safer for the plumbing structures that surround them. If you’re in a high-rise building and can’t get to the ground floor, get to the hallways in the center of the building and take shelter there until the tornado passes.

What to do during a tornado watch or severe weather: Protect your body

Whether you’re taking shelter in a basement or hiding in a bathroom to stay safe during a tornado, you have one thing to do: Protect your body. You can do this by covering your head and neck with your arms.

Get in the tub or closet and cover up with thick blankets, sleeping bags, pillows — even a whole mattress. These can help keep you safer in the event that debris begins to fly.

Bicycle helmets are also a great way to protect your head from possible injury if the roof or ceiling ends up compromised. It’s smart to keep a helmet in your apartment if you live in a tornado zone, especially if there’s no tornado shelter nearby.

During and after a tornado, you’ll want to protect your lungs from debris, so consider wearing a mask or protective face covering, too.

seek shelter even if unsure of how severe the tornado is. an interior room or interior hall is a good place to start

Know the signs of a tornado

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), there’s no substitute for staying alert to the sky when it comes to tornadoes. Here are some signs to look and listen for:

 • Strong, persistent rotation in the cloud base
 • Whirling dust or debris on the ground under a cloud base — tornadoes don’t always have a funnel cloud
 • Hail or heavy rain followed either by the dead calm of a fast, intense wind shift. Many tornadoes come wrapped in precipitation and can’t always be seen.
 • A loud, continuous roar or rumble, which doesn’t fade in a few seconds like thunder
 • At night: Small, bright, blue-green to white flashes at ground level near a thunderstorm (as opposed to silvery lightning up in the clouds). These mean power lines got snapped by very strong winds.
 • At night: Persistent lowering from the cloud base, illuminated or silhouetted by lightning — especially if it’s on the ground or there’s a blue-green-white power flash underneath.

knowing where your storm shelter is or where to seek help is important for when a storm arrives

Be prepared during peak season with a temporary tornado shelter

It’s important to have a plan for where to go during a tornado, even if you don’t live in an area where such storms are common.

Practice tornado drills with your family or roommates, and coordinate with neighbors and your apartment community’s management team. Find out ahead of time if there’s a public tornado shelter in your neighborhood. If there is, learn its location and the fastest route to get there.

Put together a tornado emergency kit that’s easy to grab and bring to your sheltering place when there’s a warning. You should include a battery-powered radio and flashlight, extra batteries, any prescription medications and a first-aid kit.

Make sure you have water — one gallon per person, per day, to last three days— non-perishable food, a manual can opener, baby formula and diapers, if applicable.

Pet owners should make sure to have food, water and other important items on hand for your furry friend, too. If you have a pet and see a tornado warning, it’s smart to get them in a harness and keep them on a leash so you can easily grab them and go.

Staying safe after a tornado

If there’s damage from the tornado, keep your family or group together and wait for emergency crews to arrive. If there are injuries, tend to victims carefully.

Debris is dangerous — there will likely be broken glass and sharp objects everywhere — so steer clear. Downed power lines could still be live with electricity. Don’t touch them or anything metal nearby!

If it’s dark, don’t use matches or lighters — gas lines may have leaked. Flashlights are the only safe option in the immediate aftermath of a tornado. Remain calm and call for help.

While you can always press play on your phone, records have made their way back into popularity for a reason. Notably for nostalgia’s sake, records also boast aesthetics, tap into a revival of all things vintage, have improved sound quality, and allow for larger enjoyment of album art. With the record resurgence you can find vinyl lovers and shops all over the U.S., but there’s something special about Portland, OR – after all, it is unequivocally a vinyl town.

Whether you’re hoping to find a new favorite record shop nearby your rental home in Portland, OR, just got a player for your first apartment in Portland, OR, are adding to your lifelong collection in your Portland, OR home, or are just visiting and browsing, be sure to check out our top 8 record store recommendations in the Rose City.

1. 2nd Avenue Records

First up we have 2nd Avenue Records located in downtown Portland. “This gem has an awesome selection of both new and used records, plus an insane collection of metal music,” says Maria Chi, blogger of Peppermint Co. Besides the new, used, and plethora of metal, this spot also has a huge collection of band t-shirts that hang from the rafters, so you’re properly fitted.

2. Everyday Music

Located across from The Crystal Ballroom and also in downtown Portland is none other than Everyday Music. This shop is truly a “staple of the community and has the best selection of new and used vinyl, cd’s, cassettes, and music memorabilia,” says Chris Merrill of Perfect Harmony Academy of Music. If you’re in the market for used vinyls, but don’t happen to be downtown, they also have locations in East Portland, Seattle, and Bellingham.

3. Jackpot Records

On the eastside in the bustling Hawthorne neighborhood lives Jackpot Records, a vinyl store with a carefully curated selection. In fact, some local joints like Keys Lounge and Radio Room that only spin vinyl buy their records (or their DJs do) at this very spot, says Locksmith Jones. Beyond just the shop, Jackpot originated as an independent record label and focused on reissuing hard-to-find records from local artists like The Wipers and Satan’s Pilgrims, and other more nationally known names like Etta James and Willie Nelson at ridiculously reasonable prices.

4. Music Millennium

“Walking through its doors feels like stepping into a living history of Portland’s music scene,” describes Jesse Valencia, a member of the Portland Music Month Policy Council. Where is this spot you ask? Music Millennium of course.

This shop is Portland’s oldest record store and still remains a local landmark for a reason. Located in the Laurelhurst neighborhood, Music Millennium “boasts several rooms, filled to the brim with new and used CDs, records, DVDs, and tapes, all meticulously organized, offering something for everyone,” says Alli Sanders, KPH Radio co-chair.

“Beyond just being a store, it’s a cultural hub — hosting in-store performances, supporting local artists, and preserving the spirit of independent music,” describes Jesse. Before you go be sure to check their packed calendar for “frequent in-store listening events and live shows because you might just meet your new favorite band,” says Alli.

“With several in-store performances from a wide variety of musicians that never disappoints, Music Millennium is truly a local gem and a rich resource for local musicians and our music community,” says Sarah MacKenzie Lonigro, development associate at The Jeremy Wilson Foundation. So, “if you’re looking for somewhere to spend an afternoon, this is your spot,” recommends Alli.

5. Mississippi Records

It wouldn’t be a Portland record store article without mentioning Mississippi Records. “While it might be a small shop, it packs a huge punch,” says Blake Boris-Schacter, owner of The Get Down. “They even release their own records, repressing hidden gems and compilations,” continues Hank Failing, owner of Hank’s Music Exchange. This spot also “has super friendly and helpful staff, one of the most curated selections, and some of the best pricing in town,” adds Blake. Known for a bountiful selection of folk and soul and world music, all presented in a beautiful space, Mississippi Records “is a loved and respected musicians and collectors alike,” notes Hank.

6. Landfill Rescue Unit

You’ve heard of dumpster diving before, but this place takes it to the next level. Landfill Rescue Unit has literally transformed their shelves into funky storage that resembles big blue dumpsters and are all packed with punk, new wave, electronic, and second-hand vinyls. It’s always fun to dig and we’re sure you’ll find something you didn’t even know you were looking for.

7. Tomorrow Records

Located in Southeast Portland lives Tomorrow Records, a shop with a carefully curated selection of great used gems at reasonable prices. This welcoming and well-lit store also offers quite the inventory of vintage audio equipment, perfect for those starting out and in the market for a quality setup or for those looking to upgrade their system.

8. The Record Pub

New to the Portland record scene is The Record Pub, “the pandemic brain child of three friends and music-loving dudes who took a chance on Portland being more than just a music loving city, but a patron of that music,” tells Veronica Bisesti, executive director of Portland Radio Project. “Not only do they offer new and used vinyl (and cassettes), but they also run weekly community trivia nights that benefit local nonprofit organizations,” adds Veronica.

Whether you’re on the hunt for that record at the top of your wish-list or just enjoy getting lost in the stacks, Portland’s fantastic record stores surely have something for everyone. Since each store has a different vibe and selection, we recommend stopping by each one to find your fave.

Locals will tell you Jersey City has changed a lot over the years. Once a pass-through to the Big Apple for commuters, it’s now a destination all of its own. Jersey City is diverse, packed with culture, and still has a slightly gritty feel to it. “We help dozens of families and young professionals relocate to Jersey City every month–some escaping the big city grind, but most are not ready to lose the excitement of New York,” says NYC-based Metropolis Moving. “Many Jersey City locals are still culture vultures who want great music, art, and an offbeat, but not overexposed, eatery.”

Hidden gem places to eat in Jersey City

As one of the most diverse cities in the country, Jersey City has a lot to offer when it comes to finding delicious dining. From elevated experiences to hole-in-the wall finds, there’s plenty of options for foodies in the city. Forgive us if this list is a bit long, but we promise it’s just the tip of the Jersey City food iceberg.

theBoil

For the seafood lovers, a Jersey City must-try is the bold Cajun flavors found at theBoil. The lively joint is known for its “Boil Sauce,” Dungeness crab, shrimp boils, and garlic butter-soaked lobster tails, all served in a bag for a hands-on dining experience. Pair with one of their signature cocktails like the Henry Colada. We Are Jersey media and magazine

Scram Bakery

Treat yourself after a night out to, allegedly, Jersey City’s best breakfast sandwich, which features a “seriously good” combo of sausage and jalapeno. Only open for a few AM hours the latter part of the week, Scram Bakery is the perfect neighborhood breakfast spot. It’s just off the PATH too for a treat on your morning commute. – Metropolis Moving

Jane Doe

According to The Hoboken Girl creator and Hudson County expert Jennifer Tripucka, this downtown Jersey City spot has some of the best fries in the region. “They’re made with scalloped potatoes, refried in beef tallow and served with a garlic aioli–incredible,” Tripucka raves to us.

 • The AlpsA newer bar/restaurant combo serving old school food and drinks
 • Bread & SaltLocal neighborhood Italian bakery with limited hours
 • CortoHandmade Italian pasta and dishes with a “Bring Your Own Beer” policy

Other must-try spots for foodies in Jersey City, as recommended by Tripucka, range from sandwiches to Bangladeshi dishes.

Mordi’s Sandwich Shop

Located in Bergen-Lafayette and serves up Israeli-inspired food and sandwiches, Mordi’s focuses on freshness and quality ingredients for a delicious sandwich.

Pinwheel Garden

A low key and casual dumpling and noodle bar with great gluten-free and vegan options. The warm and welcoming interior was hand-constructed by the owners before opening the neighborhood spot in Layfayette.

Korai Kitchen

A NYT-acclaimed spot featuring Bangladeshi dishes, run by a mother-daughter team. Expect to try eating with your hands in line with traditional Bangladeshi dining, and the dine-in menu changes frequently based on what the chef feels like making and has on hand.

Must-try spots according to Slice of Culture

Journalistic supporters of many diverse groups in Jersey City, Slice of Culture co-founders Adrienne Romero and Neidy Gutierrez shared these hidden gem Jersey City food spots as their top places to grab a tasty bite.

La Bodega

“La Bodega serves up authentic delicious Dominican food,” Gutierrez recommends. “It feels like you are eating grandma’s homemade food, which is the vibe that owner Maricarmen intended. The food is delicious from the pernil, Rabo (oxtail), mangu (mashed plantains), sancocho (soup) and more. There’s also a beautiful mural that pays homage to Jersey City and her family.”

Meryendang Pinoy

“The first of its kind, Meryendang Pinoy brings the taste of Filipino comfort food right to Downtown Jersey City,” says Romero. “They offer easy grab-and-go options for people who don’t want to eat a full meal or for people who want a quick taste of Filipino cuisine. For Filipinos who moved from the Philippines, this is where they go for a taste of back home: tokneneng, hotdogs, siomai, which are all street food, and have expanded to offer lugaw, champorado and even ube champorado. They are deeply embedded in the community from hosting pop-up events to providing a space for people’s special moments, parties and more. The owners, Jhonacel and Josan, treat their customers like family and even try their best to cook special requests.”

Bahay Kubo Mart

Romero’s final unique food recommendation is this Filipino market, which pays homage to the culture in its name, design, and food. “They offer an affordable combo deal that will give any fellow Filipino a taste of their childhood and any new customer a reason to come back from more. Aside from the delicious food (like their barbecue, logsilog or beef nilaga, to name a few), the interior correlates perfectly with their cozy-at-home-vibes; the videos and music played are Filipino songs or Filipino artists; and there’s a mini mart at the back of the store that sells Filipinos snacks and other goodies.”

Hidden gem Italian spots in Jersey City from the team at The Local Girl and Hoboken Girl

 • Laico’s Old school Italian restaurant and bar tucked away in the Greenville neighborhood, run for three generations (and counting) by the Laico family. Try the espresso martini for a treat from the bar.
 • Barge Inn – Homey, cozy, no-frills authentic Italian dining in the city. The penne with vodka sauce is a solid choice if you’re having trouble deciding what to order. With an unassuming interior, you might just miss this hidden gem if you’re not looking closely.

Hidden gem places to drink in Jersey City

Historically, downtown Jersey City had limited options for going out, but that’s changed over the last few years. Now, Jersey City has grown into a city with a lively bar-hopping scene and plenty of great spots to choose from.

“A few standouts include an unofficial hidden cocktail bar tour of all the hidden gem spots,” shares New Jersey-based Local Girl founder Tripucka. “Try PS Wine Bar, Don’t Tell Liv, Junto, dullboy, and Archer as a few spots that you must check out–most are speakeasy-style.”

You can try and tick off the many incredible speakeasies in Jersey City, but don’t forget about some of these other hidden gem spots to grab a great drink in town.

Lucky 7 Tavern

“Lucky 7 Tavern is the coziest dive bar in Jersey City,” raves Slice of Culture’s Gutierrez. “Walk in and you feel such chill vibes and can’t beat the prices. It’s a place where you can go to have a nice night out without breaking the bank.”

The Brightside Tavern

For drinks that include evening entertainment, check out what’s going on at Brightside. “Tommy, the owner, and his team are so welcoming to anyone who comes in,” Gutierrez shares. “You can enjoy jazz, karaoke, trivia nights throughout the week. Not to mention they got a game room upstairs and an extensive food and drink menu.”

Low Fidelity

Sip on delicious drinks ranging from mezcal-based to shitake-infused blended scotch in the backyard area and grab a slice of the infamous pizza offerings for a tasty night out. “Locals come for a drink and stay for the Detroit-style pizza–pillowy, bread-like, and cheesy,” reveals Metropolis Moving company.

Unique places to shop in Jersey City

Jersey City has quietly built a reputation as a haven for vintage lovers, thrifters, and small business enthusiasts, with a shopping scene as diverse as its residents. Unlike the fast-paced retail landscape of neighboring Manhattan, Jersey City is home to plenty of hidden gems and unique shopping with an added personal touch. Here are just a few of the places to add to your Jersey City shopping experience.

301 Collective x Rudo is a thoughtfully curated boutique in the heart of downtown Jersey City. The shop is a collaborative space between Nouveua + Vintage and Rudo Plants, and is the perfect spot to find carefully selected apparel, lush houseplants, gorgeous flowers, and unique home decor.

The apparel side is hand-selected by Marisa Corrado, who started her business as an online shop over ten years ago. “I was beyond thrilled at the opportunity to open the brick-and-mortar last year,” she shares. “We place an emphasis on quality, sustainability, and timeless style, and every corner of the store seamlessly blends modern elegance with a warm, organic atmosphere.”

Whether you’re looking for a statement piece, a gift for a loved one, or just looking to be inspired, this beautifully designed space is the perfect spot to indulge.

Into the Void

A newer addition to the Jersey City shopping scene is Into the Void. Founded by co-owners Andy Schulz and Greg Yannalfo, this unique furniture store specializes in 20th-century modern design. Stand-out furniture selections ranging from mid-century modern classics to ‘90s styling are intermixed with a distinctive art selection for a broad range of pieces for your home. The space used to contain a mini coffee shop inside, but recently the owners have decided to solely focus on furniture and art, using the former coffee space to expand their offerings. For distinct antique furniture and unique art, don’t miss out on a visit to Into the Void.

Another Man’s Treasure (AMT) Vintage

With bright neon signs, color-coordinated shopping, and silk-fringed lighting, the shopping experience at AMT is sure to be just as delightful as any hidden treasures found inside.

Cranky Angel

A highlighted and recommended hidden gem in Jersey City by The Hoboken Girl, Cranky Angel is a newer brick and mortar vintage clothing store in Jersey City. Founded by New Jersey native Montana Fucci, the store specializes in 90s and Y2K fashion that is reflected in the store’s playful and nostalgic decor. In partnership with local artists, Cranky Angel also offers customization services for your purchased clothing like airbrushing, rhinestoning, and crocheting. Checkout at the custom counter embedded with old-school toys to finish your trip down memory lane.

Fun things to do in Jersey City

While Jersey City has lots of great places to visit, eat, and drink, there is also an emerging focus on arts, culture, and music. Here are just a few lesser-known events that you don’t want to miss while living in Jersey City.

Lo-Fi Takes the Street

Remember the local bar Low Fidelity (Lo-Fi) we recommended earlier? “What began as a local band block party has grown into an annual music festival that draws the best crowd every June,” shares the team at Metropolis Moving.

Hosted by Low Fidelity Bar in Jersey City Heights, Lo-Fi Takes the Streets is a free, all-day block party. Takes the Streets typically takes place on Ferry Street between Ogden and Palisade Avenues, and features a diverse lineup of local bands and artists, offering genres from rock to soul. Today, it remains a well-loved event designed for locals and visitors alike to explore new neighborhoods, discover emerging artists, and experience Jersey City’s growing cultural scene—all for free.

Coles Street Market

Coles Street Market is the first new farmers market in Jersey City in over a decade, and is emerging as a community hotspot. Inspired by NYC’s Union Square Market, this bustling hidden gem neighborhood market brings together 20+ carefully selected vendors offering fresh organic produce, artisanal goods, and farm-to-table options.

What makes it special? “Coles Street Market was born out of a desire to create real connection in a fast-paced world,” shares Jaclyn Rosenberg, founder of city experience coordinator SocietyX. “With so much noise in our daily lives, we often miss out on the simple joys of meeting new people, enjoying fresh air, and discovering local businesses.”

Beyond shopping, the market hosts free wellness activities like yoga, Pilates, kids’ music classes, and soccer, making it a space to connect, unwind, and support small businesses. Open to all—families, young professionals, and even pets—Coles Street Market fosters a welcoming, community-driven atmosphere.

Where to see street art in Jersey City

Longtime traveler and blogger Sue Davies at Travel for Life Now has spent decades in New York City, just across the river from Jersey City. With a passion for discovering local street art, she was happy to share her knowledge of the Jersey City street art scene. According to Sue, world-class street art can be found all over Jersey City—here’s how to find it yourself:

A few places to look: Downtown, the Heights, Journal Square, Little India, McGinley Square, near the Holland Tunnel and under Route 139.

Artists: There are murals by famous street artists such as Kobra, Shepard Fairey (most famous for the Obama hope poster), Distort, Queen Andrea, Pixel Pancho, as well as local artists from New Jersey and New York. Our favorite piece is Elefanka and Mousezilla by Ron English. It is on a wall in an out of the way corner of Jersey City, found at 266 Erie, not too far from the huge David Bowie mural by Kobra.

Bonus art: The Mana Contemporary Art Center (another hidden gem in Jersey City) is another place to see beautiful street art. The center has interesting exhibits inside as well.

Where to get great views in Jersey City

To wrap up our Jersey City guide, look across the Hudson River. Jersey City actually boasts breathtaking skyline views of New York City right from its river shores. Here are some top local spots for taking in the iconic sights, from the Manhattan skyline to the Statue of Liberty.

The Hudson River Waterfront Walkway

New Jersey-based blogger Melissa Koffe, otherwise known as The Global Ghana Girl, highly recommends this walk in Jersey City. It’s also convenient for commuting, as there’s easy access to the PATH train, Light Rail, and Port Imperial Ferry Terminal. You can also take a Statue of Liberty cruise or dinner cruise with City Cruises.”

Liberty State Park

“A peaceful escape within the city, Liberty State Park is perfect for a morning jog, picnic, or sunset stroll along the waterfront. We love this Jersey City hidden gem for its stunning Statue of Liberty views, open green spaces, and the historic Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal. On weekends, you’ll find everything from yoga groups to live jazz performances.” –We Are Jersey
