What’s cowboy chic? Why is it trending?

Western styles such as “cowboy chic” give apartment and home dwellers a mix of cozy, rugged, and lived-in that feels approachable. “After all, it’s the versatility of Western designs that makes this accessible trend popular in the first place, as Lacey Boyer of her eponymous Lacey Boyer Interior Design says. “The popularity of Western decor taps into a broader cultural fascination with nostalgia, authenticity, and a longing for connection to rugged landscapes and simpler times. The enduring appeal of cowboy-chic lies in its versatility. It’s not merely a fleeting trend but a timeless aesthetic that can be adapted to various design sensibilities, from modern rustic to eclectic bohemian.”

It seems that other designers agree. According to Alex Woulf of Sustainably Staged, ” Western room decor is poised to make a stylish comeback, and there’s no better time to explore the intersection of heritage-inspired aesthetics and modern design principles. From rugged textures to earthy palettes, there’s a richness and authenticity to Western-inspired interiors that I find utterly captivating.”

Additionally, according to Dr. Jitin Chadha, Founder and CEO of AND Academy, “The allure of Western decor brings captivating charm into your home. ‘Cowboy chic,’ with rustic accents and vintage-inspired furnishings, is an interior design style that infuses a spirit of adventure and authenticity into any environment.”

Laura Medicus of Laura Medicus Interiors, a premier home design studio in Denver, also weighs in on cowboy chic decor: “When Beyonce sings about Levi Jeans and line dancing, we pay attention. Cowboy chic is a cool Western vibe that’s lived in, it embraces vintage finds and is pulled together with dark colors and metallic shine. In 2024, this is inclusive of Western Americana with moody colors, fringe, denim, and worn leather.”

Where to find ‘cowboy chic’ room decor and its defining characteristics

While anyone can add elements of this aesthetic to their homes, it’s going to feel more authentic in Western or Western-adjacent areas, like the desert areas or the Midwest. With that said, anyone can introduce cowboy-chic to their interior design. No need to gatekeep here!

As Casey Coleford of the California-based design firm, Casey Coleford Interior Design, posits, “Western-themed elements will always have a place in interior design. Whether it be a cowhide rug, wrought iron hardware, or a collection of cowboy hats hung on the wall. Geography also has a lot to do with what you’ll find in any given room: It is expected in heartland states (think Cracker Barrel). Incorporating Western elements pays homage to our settlers, and won’t be affected by music trends.” she says.

According to studio mtn founder Sierra Fox, “Western influence is everywhere, permeating beyond interior design; models dating cowboys, beach girls in cowboy boots, and a vacation on a ranch to see a rodeo is reigning over tropical getaways and city stays.”

While Fox and her team feel inclined to protect their own private Idaho, they are also embracing the Western decor movement as a whole. “For example, studio mtn loves seeing the resurgence of worn leather, the warmth of reclaimed wood and patinated metals, and the timeless allure of rustic finishes. Western style goes beyond just aesthetics — it captures the essence of adventure, resilience, and a connection to nature. When done right, any space can tap into the soulful energy of the American West.”

The characteristic elements of cowboy chic decor can work anywhere, says Libby Palmieri of House of L Designs. Plus, they can be interpreted across many different iterations of the style, from Barbie-glam Western to Americana.

“If you think of Western decor ideas as gash, think again,” she says. “Interior trends are embracing cowboy chic, with luxurious fringed suede barrel chairs, beautiful prints, and thick, ropey alpaca. The new Western feel is all about a sumptuous reinterpretation of what has been a constant context in American vernacular.

Darker paint palettes of port wines, charcoals, and pine are the perfect backdrop for accents of bourbon and saddle. Shake it up, depending on the state, and a sub-context of relativity can be found: Urban Western, perfect in a modern loft, boho Western with touches of Navajo and macrame, and glammy Western for all those Barbie enthusiasts, because who can forget Margot Robbie’s sensational hot pink fringed jumpsuit? And while Beyonce has certainly kicked the dust up on this new trend – it started with Margot Robbie in “Barbie”! Look for the dawn of this in upstart areas such as LA, NY, Chicago, and Miami!”

Try Western rugs for starters

One cowboy chic decor idea to try is pretty low-commitment: Simply add a Western rug to the floor to see if you fancy this trend. For example, cowhide rugs provide a fresh take on an animal print that feels more on-trend than, say, leopard print.

According to Alicia at Rodeo Cowhide Rugs, “Affordability has also made cowhide rugs more accessible, once seen as luxury items, they are now within reach for a broader audience. Additionally, they align perfectly with the latest design trends, including bohemian chic and Scandinavian minimalism. In particular, as Western themes gain popularity each year, cowhide rugs have become essential for creating an authentic cowboy-inspired decor, enhancing the rugged yet refined aesthetic of Western-themed spaces.”

Add some artwork to enhance the cowboy chic

Want to display your Western decor more prominently? Dress up your wall with some tapestries or art.

“Western art portrays a unique time in history,” explains renowned Arizona-based artist Miguel Camarena. “The modern western look is trending because of the simplicity and elegance of the rustic modern decor and its simple use of muted colors such as warm and cool greys of the whole hue scale.

An example of this would be my “White Horse” painting. At the same time, there is the opposite end of the spectrum where whimsical and high key colors can add a pop of color and accent to most homes, which is why my “Donkey Collection” has become famous worldwide.”

Western decor ideas - rustic furniture in a kitchen

Look to rustic decor for inspiration

Rustic decor gives your space an unfinished look, whether or not you’re committing to a fully cowboy chic decor scheme. Think live-edge dining tables, reclaimed wood furniture, and well-worn leather when curating items.

This style exudes warmth and coziness through its use of organic textures and vintage-inspired furnishings, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of ranch side cottages or lodges set in the mountains. Some rustic decor bleeds into other down-home looks, such as modern farmhouse and shabby chic, allowing DIY designers to play around with different looks to find the self-expression sweet spot.

According to owner Shannon White of the Wyoming-based interior design firm, Shannon White Design, rustic and Americana add familiarity and accessibility to the Western trend. “In recent years, my firm has found that home owners in Jackson (and beyond) want to bring Western elements into even more modern interiors. They’re seeking a more rustic Americana feel, worn in but not too distressed. Or they might bring in the cliche spaghetti Western poster blown up for a touch of fun. It’s a way of tying their home to this place and the cultural phenomenon.

We’re finding that Navajo fabrics are coming into play in even our most contemporary homes. Natural rustic elements, and shades of brown, blue and red provide elegant accents to any room. The American West “lifestyle” brings thoughts of worn-in comfort, nights around the fire wrapped in a cozy blanket, and kicking back with a good beer. It evokes homes as a place to relax, not as showrooms, and the western aesthetic leans heavily to worn and loved.”

Bring fashion into your Western decor

“We love seeing ‘cowboy chic core’ emerging in both fashion and home design,” says Patrick Burch, co-owner of Cave + Post Trading Co., an Arizona-based men’s boutique specializing in American heritage brands. “In our store and in our home, we like to use authentic Western pieces as decor. For example, we love to use cowboy hats from Spur Hats or Lost River Hat Co. as wearable wall art. Guitars mounted on the wall are another fun way to introduce a cowboy chic decor vibe.”

Similarly, Libby Palmieri of House of L Designs talks about how the runway’s influence energizes the trend beyond the Western states: “As a designer, the usual requests for Western embellishments are typically found in dusty cowboy towns tucked away in Colorado, Montana, and Utah where home design can embrace the fantasy and bring the landscape strokes inside.

Now, however, the influence of runway fashion in the house of Louis Vuitton (for starters) with Pharrell at the helm and his Western-themed men’s spring 2024 retro cowboy collection and the music industry, with Beyonce’s new release of ‘Cowboy Carter,’ that is all about to change.”

Western room decor looks great with leather accents like the one pictured here.

Just how much will pop culture influence Western decor?

“As a roofer who’s seen a fair share of houses over the years, I’d say trends come and go faster than a Texas tumbleweed,” says Brendan Anderson of Montana-based roofing company Brix Systems. “Now, this Beyonce country album buzz sure is something new. I wouldn’t say it’ll cause a full-on stampede toward Western decor, but it could definitely spur some folks on the fence. Here’s why…”

 • Celebrity influence is powerful: Anderson continues, “Beyonce’s a huge star, and when she shines a light on something, people notice. It can spark interest in people who might not have considered Western style before.”

 • Rustic charm allure: “Western decor already has a certain timeless appeal. The worn leather, natural textures, and warm colors create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. This might resonate with folks lookin’ for a more comfortable, down-home feel.”

 • Subtle shift, not a roundup: “I wouldn’t expect folks to overhaul their whole house. More likely, we’ll see a sprinkle of Western influence – fringe on throw pillows, a rustic coffee table, or maybe some weathered barnboard on an accent wall.”

Anderson goes on to explain why pop culture influence might not supersede more practical considerations, like maintenance needs, location, or budget:

 • Maintenance matters: “Western decor often features natural materials like leather and wood. These require more upkeep than, say, laminate flooring or synthetic fabrics. Folks gotta be prepared to put in the extra effort.”
 • Regional appeal: “The Western aesthetic might not translate everywhere. Sure, it fits perfectly in ranch houses and cabins, but might feel out of place in a beach bungalow or a modern loft.”
 • Budget considerations: “Genuine Western furniture and antiques can be pricey. Most folks will likely stick to accents and accessories, which can be more affordable.”

Commenting on the recent interest in Western decor ideas, Patrick Burch of Cave + Post Trading also adds, “Shows like Yellowstone were already popularizing Western fashion and design, and Beyonce’s “Cowboy Carter” is feeding that trend. Subtle Western touches go with so many styles — just like in fashion. You can add accent pieces to your home that don’t overwhelm, but add a cool Western touch.”

Creating a balcony herb garden is a rewarding and practical way to add color and plant life to your outdoor space, as well as enjoy fresh herbs year-round. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or a complete beginner, starting a herb garden on your balcony doesn’t require a lot of space or expertise.

With the right herbs, containers, and tools, you can transform your balcony into a lush, productive oasis that’s both functional and beautiful. So whether you live in a home in Gatlinburg, TN, an apartment in Old Orchard Beach, ME, or a small rental home in Des Moines, IA, below are some helpful tips and strategies to get you started.

Best beginner herbs for your kitchen

Creating an herb garden can help liven up a bland balcony. However, it’s important to consider varieties that are easy to grow and that you’ll utilize when cooking. Creating an edible garden by growing herbs that you commonly use will ensure your experience is both practical and enjoyable. Anna Gall from Deanna Greens and Garden Art details some kitchen staples to consider:

“Herbs which are easy to grow are sage, rosemary, thyme, basil, and mint. Grow these herbs in pots on your patio during the warm months or windowsill in the winter. Use an organic, high-nutrient quality potting mix in pots that have a hole(s) for drainage.

Incorporating your fresh snipped herbs in your recipes will bring the most flavor bang to your culinary dish. The rule of thumb in cooking with fresh herbs, one tablespoon of fresh snipped herbs is equal to one teaspoon of the dried variety. Enjoy your next patio dinner with a loaf of your rosemary focaccia and iced pineapple sage tea!”

These herbs are not only easy to grow, but they are also incredibly useful in the kitchen, making them perfect for beginners. In addition to the beginner herbs mentioned above, take a look at the varieties below for your balcony herb garden:

 • Oregano – A must-have for Mediterranean and Italian dishes, oregano thrives in sunny spots and is a great addition to pizzas, pasta, and sauces.
 • Cilantro – Popular in Mexican and Indian cuisines, cilantro adds a fresh, bright flavor to salsas, curries, and salads. It requires full sun and well-drained soil.
 • Lavender – While not strictly a cooking herb, lavender can be used in both sweet and savory dishes. It adds a unique flavor to desserts, teas, and even meats like lamb.

Selecting herbs that match your cooking preferences will make your apartment balcony garden not only functional but also a source of constant culinary inspiration.

Create an herb tea garden

Cooking herbs are a great way to spice up your home cooking, however, growing herbs with which to steep a relaxing tea is also a worthwhile endeavor. Paula Grainger from Paula Grainger Herbalist suggests the following:

“Create an herb tea garden by planting aromatic herbs like mint, lemon balm and lemon verbena. Regular trimming will give you refreshing herb teas for months on end and encourage the plants to keep producing more growth. These herbs are great for pollinators too so it’s a win-win for you and the environment.”

These herbs not only make soothing, aromatic teas but also brighten up your garden with their lovely blooms and scents. A tea garden is a great way to utilize the herbs you grow and a simple step toward sipping your way to wellness.

Unique heirloom herbs for your balcony herb garden

In addition to the beginner herbs mentioned above, consider planting heirloom varieties. Heirloom herb varieties have been passed down through generations, typically 50 years or older, and are usually open-pollinated, meaning they reproduce naturally without human intervention and maintain consistent traits.

Lisa Dermer from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange shares the following suggestions for planting heirloom seeds: For unique herbs in container gardens, we recommend Mexican Mint Marigold, an anise-scented alternative to tarragon, and heirloom basil varieties like Mrihani, a complexly-flavored basil from Zanzibar, and Bolloso Napoletano, an Italian heirloom with huge rumpled leaves.

Green onions are easily grown on balconies: we recommend planting perennial Egyptian walking onions. The bulbs rapidly send out lovely tender onion greens and the “walking” bulbing tops and can be replanted. Garlic chives (which are flatter than chives and often used in Chinese cooking) will grow as a perennial in containers. Bring them indoors over the winter to prevent die-back during the colder months.”

Sunlight and watering: essential for herb garden success

Sunlight and watering are crucial for healthy herb growth. Understanding your herbs’ light and water needs will help ensure a thriving balcony garden.

Sunlight: finding the right balance

A good place to start is observing how much sunlight your balcony receives. Sunny balconies are perfect for sun-loving herbs, while shaded areas work well for more tolerant varieties. Angelica from Peachy Apple Vegan elaborates, saying that, “Not all balconies get full sun, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a flourishing herb garden. If your space is more shaded, opt for mint, parsley, and chives, which thrive with just a few hours of indirect light.

For sunnier spots, rosemary, thyme, and oregano love direct sunlight and drier conditions. To keep your plants growing strong, rotate your herb garden planters every couple of weeks to ensure even exposure to sunlight and airflow. This prevents weak/uneven growth, especially for basil, dill, and cilantro, which tend to stretch toward the light. A simple shift in position can make all the difference in getting a lush, healthy harvest!”

At Rent., we also recommend utilizing reflective surfaces by positioning pots near walls or windows that reflect sunlight for extra light exposure. In especially low-light conditions or winter months, you can supplement with grow lights to mimic natural sunlight.

Watering: Getting the right amount

Proper watering is essential, but balance is key. “Don’t underestimate how much you have to water,” advises Wes Hooper, co-founder & urban farmer at Lifespace Gardens. “Most balconies get a lot of sun exposure (which can be great!) but can require watering twice a day in the summer. That’s why we build self-watering planters for all of our condo clients. It makes maintenance way easier, and reduces watering down to an easy weekly routine.”

It is also advisable to monitor your watering frequency. Check soil moisture regularly. Water when the top inch feels dry, especially in warm weather. During cooler months, reduce watering frequency, and always ensure containers have drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. With the right sunlight and watering practices, your herbs will thrive and provide fresh ingredients all year long.

Choosing the right containers and soil

The foundation of any successful herb garden starts with the right containers and soil. Choosing the correct containers and soil is crucial for healthy growth, as herbs need adequate drainage, space and nutrients to grow their roots. Katie Stagliano, founder and chief executive gardener at Katie’s Krops recommends the following:

 • Choose the right container size: “When growing an edible garden on your balcony, selecting the right container size is crucial. Plants need enough space to grow and thrive. For example, tomatoes do best in at least a 5-gallon container, while herbs and flowers can flourish in smaller pots. Giving your plants ample room will help ensure strong root development and a plentiful harvest!
 • Use high-quality soil: When planting a container garden, your plants rely entirely on the soil you provide. It is vital to choose a nutrient-rich soil to give your vegetables the best start. Since roots are confined in container gardening, the plants need optimal nutrition to produce an abundant harvest. Investing in good soil will lead to happy and healthy plants!”

When selecting containers for your balcony herb garden, consider materials like terracotta, ceramic, and plastic pots . Ensure the size of the pot is appropriate for the herb you’re planting. Herbs like mint may require larger pots, while basil and thyme will do well in smaller containers. Saad Harraz from Harraz Farm & Garden notes that you should “Ensure your pots have drainage holes to prevent root rot.”

A high-quality, well-draining potting mix with added organic compost will keep your herbs nourished and healthy. Saad goes on to add that “Spring and early autumn are ideal for germinating most herbs. However, with the right indoor setup, you can start growing herbs year-round.” Consider using window boxes or hanging baskets if you’re working with limited space, as they can be mounted on railings or placed on shelves.

Maximizing space and sustainability

Maximizing the space on your balcony and making your herb garden sustainable are key to ensuring long-term success. Saad also chimed in here with a great design technique to maximize vertical space in your apartment balcony garden, advising that gardeners “Use wall planters, tiered shelves, or hanging baskets to make the most of small balconies. This not only saves space but also creates a lush, green aesthetic.”

Another great space-saving technique comes to us courtesy of Naomi Stephens, founder of Permaculture Apartment, who recommends companion planting. Naomi says that “Certain plants can benefit when planted together. For example, planting rosemary and oregano together works well because rosemary repels pests that can harm oregano. Planting a low-maintenance marigold like French marigolds alongside your herb garden is a good natural pest deterrent for most pests while providing aroma and beautiful color to your balcony.”

In addition to optimally utilizing space, it’s important to consider the longevity of your garden when brainstorming balcony herb garden ideas. Tazz Adams from Bonafide has some stellar advice for ensuring sustainability, noting that “Even in an urban setting, a balcony herb garden can thrive with the right approach. Choose herbs suited to your climate, use organic soil, and look into self-watering pots or recycled containers to help conserve water while keeping plants healthy. Proper drainage and at least six hours of sunlight daily are key to healthy growth.”

In addition to the above suggestions, rainwater harvesting is a great way to contribute to the sustainability of your balcony herb garden. Collect rainwater using a small barrel or container. This reduces your environmental impact and ensures your herbs receive natural, chemical-free water.

Helpful tools and accessories

When considering balcony herb garden ideas and garden maintenance, you’ll need a few essential tools and accessories. As mentioned above, the containers that you choose to plant in can drastically affect your gardening experience.

Dr. Joe Roselle, COO of Urban Farming Education recommends using “The Ready Go Garden Bag System, an innovative, climate-smart solution designed for small urban spaces. These breathable, portable grow bags create the perfect microenvironment for herbs.

They enhance root aeration and optimize water retention, which is essential for healthy plant growth in limited spaces. They are ideal for renters and urban dwellers, allowing for easy mobility and adaptability to varying balcony conditions. The Ready Go Garden Bag System aligns with UFE’s mission of closing the gap between information and action, empowering individuals to grow their own fresh food even in compact urban garden settings.”

After choosing your preferred container, the additional tools below will make gardening easier and more efficient:

 1. Hand trowel: A small, sturdy hand trowel is perfect for digging, planting, and moving soil.
 2. Pruning shears: Regularly trimming your herbs promotes new growth and keeps them looking neat. Invest in a good pair of pruning shears for precision.
 3. Watering can or hose: A small watering can with a fine spout is ideal for delicate herbs. Consider a hose with an adjustable nozzle to help water larger container gardens.
 4. Plant markers: Use plant markers to label your herbs. This will help you remember which herbs you’ve planted, especially as they begin to grow.
 5. Mulch: Adding a thin layer of mulch around your herbs helps retain moisture and reduces the need for frequent watering.

For a more specialized approach to maintaining your balcony herb garden, Nicole Dillon from BreeMar Flower Farm shares some stellar suggestions for upgrading your garden setup:

Vertical gardens: “There are some terrific vertical gardens (like the GreenStalk) that help make the most of a small space. Herbs and container-sized varietals of vegetables do well in a vertical configuration. With many pockets, it’s easy to succession plant. You can even throw some edible, flowering plants, like nasturtium, in there too for added beauty.

Intensive planting: An elevated raised bed (Consider self-watering for less maintenance and dripping messes) is a great option for a balcony. Utilize intensive planting methods and square-foot gardening techniques to make the most of the bed space. Usually, plants can be planted much closer than the seed packet indicates.”

Start your balcony herb garden today

Starting a balcony herb garden is an enjoyable and sustainable way to enhance your cooking while making the most of your outdoor space. By selecting easy-to-grow herbs, using the appropriate containers and soil, maximizing your space, and investing in the right tools, you’ll be well on your way to a thriving herb garden. With just a little effort, you can enjoy fresh, homegrown herbs at your fingertips, adding a personal touch to every dish you prepare. Happy gardening!

Butter yellow is having a moment beyond just your Pinterest feed. This shade is popping up everywhere from Timothée Chalamet’s surprise Oscars look to Sabrina Carpenter’s soft yellow mini at the Governors Ball. Versace even anchored its Spring 2025 collection with it, proving butter yellow isn’t just a seasonal fling – it’s a full-blown style statement.

The best part? It’s translating beautifully from fashion into interiors. Butter yellow color is soft, warm, and nostalgic without feeling dated. It’s a color that brings light into a room without taking over the entire space. Think subtle sunshine and not screaming lemonade. If you’ve been looking for a fresh, comforting hue to work into your home, this is the one to watch. Think a yellow statement wall in an Atlanta home, a fuzzy yellow rug in a Charlotte apartment, or even butter-yellow kitchen chairs in a New Orleans rental home. Butter yellow is a color that fits anywhere while still standing out.

Why the butter yellow color works

What makes butter yellow color different from other yellows is its softness. It doesn’t shout. It glows. It’s that dreamy middle ground between pastel and punchy, offering warmth without overwhelming the senses.

“Butter yellow is having a major moment this season, making waves in both fashion and interior design,” Alex Carlier, founder of MyColorAnalysis AI, details. “After shining in Prada’s and Jacquemus’ latest Spring/Summer 2025 collections, this warm, sophisticated hue translates beautifully into home spaces. At My Color Analysis AI, we particularly love how it works wonders with crisp whites for a fresh look, soft grays for modern elegance, and deep navy for that perfect pop of contrast. What makes butter yellow special is how it brightens up north-facing rooms while creating a calming, stress-reducing atmosphere – it’s cheerful without being overwhelming, making it perfect for today’s need for comforting spaces.”

Interior design-wise, butter yellow is versatile. “Butter yellow works well in any setting because it adds cheerful vibes to every room. The interior design world has adopted this color because it complements both bold and neutral color schemes,” Rachel Bustin with Home in the Pastures uncovers. “The combination of butter yellow with deep blues or earthy greens will help you build a balanced and welcoming environment.”

The flexibility extends into interior design styles, whether you’re into vintage charm, Scandinavian minimalism, or cozy cottagecore, this color can flex to fit your vibe. “Butter yellow is the standout shade of 2025, bringing a soft, nostalgic glow to interiors,” Philip Booth with J and P Hats explains. “Designers are embracing it as the new neutral, using it in everything from color-drenched walls to statement furniture and retro-inspired accents. Its versatility allows it to pair effortlessly with earthy tones, muted blues, or bold patterns, making it ideal for both minimalist and maximalist aesthetics. Whether through a buttery velvet armchair or a sunlit kitchen backsplash, this hue adds a cheerful yet grounded warmth to any space.”

Easy ways to use a butter yellow color at home

You don’t have to repaint an entire room to lean into this trend. Small shifts can have a big impact. Here’s how to bring in that buttery goodness:

Color drenching or statement piece

“Butter is the ultimate new neutral in this playful take on color. Bolder than beige, with a European edge and versatility at its core, butter yellow blends as seamlessly with cozy pastels as it does with an unexpected pop of red,” Becca Stern, co-founder and creative director of Mustard Made explains.

“With a timeless air and an undeniable nod to luxury, Butter is here to stay and is perfect for both renters and homeowners. Add this golden, sunny hue to the walls and experiment with color drenching, or if you’re limited with decorating, a statement piece of furniture or some carefully curated table-scaping accessories can work wonders to bring in this creamy shade.”

Textiles

Texture is an easy, beginner-friendly way to work yellow into your decor scheme. Swapping out your usual throw pillows or bedding for butter-yellow versions is a simple way to begin your butter-yellow journey.

“Butter yellow, with its gentle warmth and inherent optimism, offers surprising versatility in interiors. Its current popularity stems from a desire for comforting yet uplifting environments,” the team at the International Journal of Ayurveda Orientation shares. “To decorate effectively, consider using it as an accent wall for a subtle sunny touch or in textiles like throws and cushions for a cozy feel. Complementary palettes featuring soft greens, muted blues, or even contrasting charcoal can truly make this soft yellow shine.”

Aside from textiles and throws, other textures can soak up butter yellow beautifully. “Butter yellow is a soft yet fresh hue that truly comes to life through texture. Explore styling this color in your home through different materials, such as linen, silk, or wool, as your experience of the color can vary according to the fabric you choose,” Fifi with Curate Your Style. “You can style butter yellow with grey, dusty blues, or navy, or, with pink to add vibrancy to your living space.”

Small decor items

Butter yellow is such a fresh, joyful hue, and one of our favorite ways to use it is through unexpected details that quietly brighten a space. Molly Lucas with Maison de Molly continues, “Think picture frames, vases, sculptural objects, or even painted trim and baseboards. It brings warmth without overwhelming a room and pairs beautifully with soft blue grays, dusty teals, muted olive greens, and warm whites. These subtle, curated touches allow renters and homeowners alike to embrace the trend without a full commitment — it’s like adding a bit of sunshine exactly where you need it.”

Leaning into decor styles

Butter yellow naturally appears in design styles like cottagecore and French country, adding warmth to vintage pieces and soft neutrals. It also brightens mid-century modern and retro spaces, offering a cheerful pop in kitchens and accents.

“Yellow is a cheerful color for any space. It can be used as a neutral or a statement color. I enjoy using soft buttery yellow which lends to a creamy neutral. Its softness makes it easy to layer and gives a European Cottage feel,” ANG and JOEY explain.

Pairing with other colors

As other experts touched on earlier, pairing butter yellow is flexible, fun, and simple.

The color combinations are endless, as this yellow shade can serve as a neutral. “Butter yellow is a breath of fresh air — it radiates warmth, optimism, and a touch of nostalgia, making it a perfect choice for brightening up modern interiors. I love using it in kitchens, reading corners, or even cabinetry, where it adds character without overwhelming the space. It’s wonderfully adaptable: pair it with warm wood tones, soft whites, or muted greens for a calm, natural look, or introduce bolder accents like navy, terracotta, or dusty rose for a more playful edge. It’s that rare color that feels both comforting and current — perfect for anyone looking to bring joy and personality into their home,” Jessica Langco with Sara Carroll Design details.

Butter yellow in different rooms

This creamy yellow shade is sure to complement any room. “Butter yellow is such a beautiful shade of color. Use it to literally brighten and bring warmth,” Stacee Amos with The SugarApple explains. “Use it in the kitchen with dish towels or dinnerware, in the bathroom or bedroom with lamp bases or linens, and in the living area with storage baskets and blankets. This shade will bring joy to any room.”

 • Living room: A butter-yellow armchair or lamp adds warmth and breaks up cooler tones.
 • Kitchen: Try butter-yellow bar stools or tile backsplashes for a vintage yet modern feel.
 • Bedroom: This color is perfect for duvet covers or curtains, creating a calm, cozy backdrop for rest.
 • Bathroom: A pop of butter yellow in towels or bath mats adds cheer without clashing with neutrals.

Regardless of where you place butter yellow, it’s sure to shine. “Butter yellow brings a soft, sunny glow that makes any room feel warm and welcoming,” Anastasiia Stepanova, founder of Dressika, an AI-powered color analysis app, explains. “It’s perfect for brightening up small spaces like bathrooms or entryways, and adds charm to kitchens and dining areas. Pair it with light woods, white accents, or soft greys to keep the look airy and modern.”

A fresh take on color

Butter yellow color isn’t trendy in the flash-in-the-pan sense. It’s understated, nostalgic, and easy to love. It brings light and personality to spaces that need a little lift, and unlike more saturated yellows, it doesn’t dominate.

If you’ve been looking for a subtle way to shift the mood in your home, butter yellow is a solid choice. Warm, welcoming, and a little unexpected. It’s one of those colors that feels like it’s always been there — even when it’s brand new to your space.

]]>
As travel continues to evolve, vacationers in 2025 are seeking more than just a place to sleep when booking vacation rentals. The right mix of luxury and modern amenities not only enhances the guest experience but can also boost occupancy rates and justify higher rental prices. So whether you own a vacation home in Miami, manage a rental in Seattle or are thinking of listing your apartment in Chicago, here are the top vacation home amenities guests are looking for in 2025.

Vacation home amenities checklist

If you’re planning to list your vacation home or are just curious about current trends, it’s important to make a checklist of accommodations your property already has and those that it would be feasible to add. Josh Smith, managing director of Franklin Airbnb Vacation Rental Property Management by Grand Welcome, shares top amenities that guests look for: “In 2025, renters are prioritizing convenience, technology, and functionality in their stays. Pet-friendly accommodations, in-unit laundry, and onsite parking remain key, but one of the biggest trends we’re seeing is the demand for dedicated remote workspaces.

A comfortable office setup with ample lighting, high-speed Wi-Fi, and even external monitors with an HDMI cable makes a property far more attractive to remote workers and digital nomads. Pairing these features with smart home technology, like keyless entry and automated climate control, ensures a seamless, stress-free experience that keeps guests coming back!” Check out the expert opinions below that elaborate on the above-listed amenities and more below!

Wellness amenities

Guests are increasingly seeking vacation homes that offer amenities that promote relaxation and well-being. In 2025, vacation rentals with wellness-focused features such as home gyms, yoga mats, or even private spas are in high demand. Fitness equipment such as treadmills, weights, or resistance bands is a great addition for health-conscious travelers.

A luxury vacation rental that includes a private sauna or steam room allows guests to unwind after a day of exploring. These house amenities can be especially appealing for those who want to maintain their fitness routine while on vacation or simply recharge in a tranquil setting.

High-speed internet and entertainment options

In the age of remote work and streaming, fast and reliable internet access is no longer a luxury but a necessity for vacation rental guests. High-speed Wi-Fi is one of the most requested amenities, with guests expecting seamless internet connectivity to stay in touch with work, and share vacation memories on social media.

Dusty Winans, Owner of Padearn, stresses the significance of internet access: “High-speed internet has become a pivotal factor for apartment renters, often influencing their leasing decisions. According to the 2024 National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC) and Grace Hill Renter Preferences Survey Report, 90% of respondents expressed interest in high-speed internet, with many considering it essential. The increasing trend of remote work has made internet speeds more critical than ever, with 52% of renters working remotely at least part-time and 70% doing so multiple days per week.”

Equally important is the availability of entertainment options. Some successful luxury vacation rentals are now equipped with state-of-the-art sound systems and a smart TV or projectors that offer access to streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime.

Fully equipped kitchens and comfortable accommodations

Many guests prefer to cook their own meals while staying at vacation rentals, making a fully equipped kitchen a must-have feature. Having modern, high-end appliances like a top-of-the-line stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher is a significant draw.

Joanne Oh, Marketing Manager of the Hilton Head Island, Breckenridge, and Great Smoky Mountains Airbnb Vacation Rental Properties (managed by Grand Welcome), highlights the importance of practicality and convenience in vacation rentals: “More renters in 2025 are looking for amenities that make life easier and more enjoyable. I’ve noticed that things like in-unit laundry and smart home features, like keyless entry or smart thermostats, are at the top of their search lists on booking channels.”

For guests planning long stays or large family gatherings, the ability to prepare home-cooked meals adds to the overall convenience and cost-effectiveness of the trip. To take it a step further, ensure your kitchen is stocked with the essentials for cooking, such as cookware, utensils, and quality dishware.

Smart home technology

As noted above, guests are increasingly expecting vacation homes to be equipped with smart home features. A luxury condominium or vacation home that integrates various forms of smart tech stands out in 2025. Shara Limoges, Managing Director of Broken Bow Airbnb Vacation Rental Property Management by Grand Welcome, emphasizes the importance of tech-savvy entertainment in vacation rentals:

“A smart TV is an essential amenity for a short-term rental as it provides guests with easy access to streaming services, live TV, and entertainment options, catering to diverse preferences and enhancing their overall experience. Whether kids want to watch cartoons, adults enjoy movies, or sports fans catch a live game, a smart TV ensures there’s something for everyone to enjoy.”

In addition to smart TVs, modern amenities like automated lighting, voice-controlled assistants, and high-tech security systems provide comfort and convenience. This technology allows guests to control everything from their room’s lighting and temperature to entertainment systems with just a few taps or voice commands.

Luxury bath amenities

For many guests, the bathroom is a critical space when selecting a vacation rental. Luxury bath amenities, such as high-quality towels, premium toiletries, and elegant bathroom fixtures, can elevate a stay from good to great. Many travelers appreciate a spa-like atmosphere, so providing a deep soaking tub, rainfall shower, or dual vanity sinks can make all the difference.

In addition to high-end bath products, heated floors and towel racks are small but appreciated touches that guests will remember. A well-appointed bathroom can be a key factor in a guest’s overall satisfaction and likelihood of returning or recommending the property.

Outdoor living and pet-friendly spaces

The demand for outdoor living spaces continues to rise, as travelers increasingly seek environments where they can relax and unwind in nature. Whether it’s a spacious deck with comfortable seating or a private hot tub, outdoor amenities are a great way to attract guests. “Renters are looking for the same thing in a home that most buyers do! Location, views, outdoor spaces, and big kitchens.” shares Brian Brown, Director of Business Development of Palm Springs Airbnb Vacation Rental Property Management by Grand Welcome

Brian adds that “Once they get past the main things, sometimes it’s the simple stuff that can really add appeal for renters. An air fryer, a fire pit, beach or snow equipment, etc.” Also a proponent of smart technology, Brian notes, “One of the biggest items, which again seems so simple, are actually smart TVs. Guests can travel without impacting their normal routine of watching their favorite shows and movies!”

As more people travel with their pets, pet-friendly vacation homes are becoming a significant selling point. Joanne Oh touches on this growing trend: “Pet-friendly accommodations, such as fenced yards or pet beds, are increasingly popular as travelers want to bring their furry companions along. Outdoor spaces offer guests a chance to relax and enjoy their vacation to the fullest.” Ensuring your vacation rental caters to guests with pets can set your property apart from the competition and increase your bookings.

Personalized vacation rental services

In 2025, guests are looking for vacation home amenities that offer personalized services to make their stay more memorable. From concierge services that help with activity bookings to personalized welcome packages, offering tailored experiences can significantly enhance the overall vacation rental experience.

Offering additional services such as daily housekeeping, private chefs, or pre-arrival grocery shopping ensures that your guests feel pampered and well-cared for. For luxury vacation homes, these added touches can turn a standard stay into an extraordinary one, ensuring repeat bookings and positive reviews.

In a nutshell: Must-have amenities for vacation rentals

As we head deeper into 2025, vacation home amenities are becoming more sophisticated, catering to the modern traveler’s desire for both luxury and convenience. Whether you’re offering a luxury condominium in the city or a tranquil retreat in the mountains, incorporating the right amenities can make your property stand out in a crowded marketplace.

Railroad Apartment Living: A Blend of Style and Simplicity https://rent.blog.convesio.cloud/railroad-style-apartment/ https://rent.blog.convesio.cloud/railroad-style-apartment/#respond Wed, 09 Apr 2025 14:00:36 +0000 http://rentblog.reevesmediagroup.com/what-is-a-railroad-style-apartment/ Railroad apartments offer a distinctive way of living with their long, narrow floorplans.

The post Railroad Apartment Living: A Blend of Style and Simplicity appeared first on The Rent. Blog : A Renter’s Guide for Tips & Advice.

]]>

Railroad apartment style, a unique and practical layout often found in older urban buildings, has gained popularity for its charm and efficiency. They’re characterized by a long, narrow floor plan where rooms are connected in a straight line. In cities like New York City, Chicago, and San Francisco, these apartments have become a hallmark of compact living.

This style offers an open, flowing layout that maximizes space. While it may not have the traditional division of rooms seen in more contemporary designs, railroad apartments provide an opportunity for creative use of space, allowing homeowners to personalize each area while maintaining a sense of continuity throughout the home.

The origins of railroad apartments

“The shotgun house dates to the early 1800s and was characterized as a narrow rectangular building with the rooms arranged one behind the other. The architectural style, which originated in West Africa, reached the shores of South Florida during this period with the migration of labourers from the Bahamas in search of work and in need of housing,” explains Architectural Design Ideas Ltd.

“The building style was simple and less expensive to construct, with very little wasted space. You could literally stand at the front door of the house and fire a shotgun through the back door without the bullet hitting any interior walls, hence the name ‘shotgun house’.

The rooms were arranged in order of privacy, with the least private areas living, dining, and kitchen, located at the front of the house and the most private areas, such as bedroom and bath, located at the back of the house. A circulation hallway was usually located to one side of the house for maximum use of the interior space.

Window openings were located directly opposite each other on the exterior walls for cross ventilation and captured the breezes that kept the buildings cool during the hot summer months. Porches were used as a comfortable transition to the outdoors and would serve either as a welcome space for visitors at the front of the house or an entertainment space for residents at the back of the house.”

Bringing nature indoors

When decorating a railroad-style apartment, incorporating plants can be a great way to bring life to the narrow, linear spaces. Since railroad apartments tend to have a long, open flow, plants can help define each area while adding texture and color to the otherwise minimalistic layout.

As Chad from Rosy Soil says, “Enhancing the livability of a railroad or shotgun-style apartment with plants involves strategic placement, optimal lighting, and the use of suitable soil mixes like Rosy Soil. Here are some tips:

 • Maximize vertical space: Utilize vertical gardening techniques, such as wall-mounted planters or hanging pots, to introduce greenery without encroaching on limited floor space. This approach adds visual interest and brings nature indoors.
 • Optimize natural light: Position plants near windows to capitalize on available sunlight. In areas with limited natural light, consider using LED grow lights to ensure your plants receive adequate illumination for healthy growth.
 • Select appropriate soil: Choose high-quality, peat-free potting mixes like Rosy Soil, which is enriched with biochar and beneficial microbes. This type of soil enhances nutrient retention and supports robust plant development.
 • Choose suitable plants: Opt for plant species that thrive in indoor environments and can adapt to varying light conditions. Examples include pothos, snake plants, and peace lilies, which are known for their resilience.”

To maximize vertical space, consider using tall plants like snake plants, dracaenas, or fiddle leaf figs. These plants can be placed in corners or along walls, drawing the eye upward and making the space feel less cramped.

With limited floor space, hanging plants like pothos, ivy, or string of pearls are excellent options. Hang them from the ceiling or from wall-mounted planters to add greenery without taking up any precious floor area.

Rhythm of the Home writes on incorporating a garden into your home. They add, “Plants breathe life into narrow spaces. A small herb garden in the kitchen window could double as decor and fresh seasoning.” Incorporating herbs like basil, rosemary, or thyme can add both greenery and practicality to your apartment. A small indoor herb garden on the windowsill can bring fresh smells and flavors into your home.

Rich Johnston of GrowScripts, a container plant care company, shares the idea of “angling a TV stand with plants behind it and adding an uplight can enhance ambiance while maintaining an open feel.”

By using a mix of tall plants, hanging greenery, and small potted plants, you can introduce natural elements into your railroad-style apartment and create a harmonious balance between functionality and style.

Smart furniture choices

In a railroad-style apartment, where space is often limited and the layout is long and narrow, choosing the right furniture is crucial to both functionality and style. The goal is to create a harmonious flow between rooms while making the most of every square inch. To achieve this, focus on versatile, space-saving pieces that can easily adapt to the unique layout of the apartment.

Daneila Bright writes on how to best optimize your furniture for railroad-style living. She says, “The layout is basically one long stretch of rooms, which can be tricky if you don’t set things up right. My biggest tip is to keep the walkway clear since there’s no ‘real’ hallway, and you don’t want to be dodging furniture just to get to the kitchen.

Storage is everything in a narrow space like this, so try to opt for furniture that does double duty (my bed has drawers underneath, and I swear by my wall-mounted shelves). Once you get creative, this layout can actually feel super cozy and functional.”

Opt for modular or multi-functional furniture that can be rearranged to suit different needs. Sofas with built-in storage, extendable dining tables, or ottomans that double as coffee tables are great choices.

Since railroad apartments tend to have narrow rooms, choose slim, low-profile furniture to maintain an open feel. Avoid bulky, oversized pieces that can overwhelm the space. Consider narrow sofas, compact armchairs, and minimalist coffee tables that won’t disrupt the flow of the apartment.

Maximize vertical space with tall bookshelves or storage units. This helps keep the floor clear and makes the most of the apartment’s height, preventing the space from feeling cramped. Wall-mounted shelves, floating desks, or wall hooks can also add storage without taking up any valuable floor space.

Separation and privacy in railroad apartments

One of the unique challenges of living in a railroad apartment is navigating the open, linear layout, which often lacks traditional walls and doors to create separation between spaces. While the continuous flow of rooms can foster a sense of openness, it can also make it difficult to establish privacy and distinct areas for different activities. However, with a few thoughtful design strategies, it’s possible to carve out private zones and create a sense of separation without sacrificing the apartment’s inherent flow.

Adam Gibbs, co-founder of parker + gibbs, says railroad-style apartments are some of their favorite and challenging spaces to design. Adam explains, “One of our favorite ways to create layered, thoughtful privacy in these spaces is to install a substantial drapery rod across the width of your space; the panels can create intimate zones when closed – perfect for a cozy dining experience – or disappear when open. And for a reliable way to make any space feel more open, unique, and airier, we always turn to a light – creative lighting options are always fun to implement, a neutral paint color palette – it’s a design default that never fails!”

To help maximize privacy and separation in a railroad-style apartment, Frankie from The Shelfist LLC offers some insightful tips. Frankie emphasizes the importance of creating intentional zones within the open layout, suggesting simple yet effective solutions that don’t compromise the apartment’s flow.

Frankie says to think in zones:

 • Bedrooms at the front and back of the apartment naturally create privacy, but adding a buffer zone — like a bookshelf, a small seating area, or perhaps even a plant wall — can break up long sightlines and make spaces feel more intentional.
 • Sliding doors can change the game. Traditional doors eat up space, so if possible, pocket doors or accordion-style dividers let you create separation without sacrificing flow. Want to keep the light moving? Try translucent glass panels — they’re modern and keep things feeling airy. I even found a few different glass paned vintage doors and hinged them together to make a room divider that light could pass through.

Elena and Mikhail from the Elena Sunshine Magazine share their suggestions for creating privacy and room separation: “You can easily create a privacy area using low shelving or a room divider that can separate the relaxation area from the rest of the room. Different lamps can create a unique mood in each part of the room, emphasizing their functional purpose; for example, table lamps, floor lamps with lampshades, string lights, or candles will create a cozy atmosphere. Changing the color scheme for each zone also contributes to the visual division of the space, it can be a change in the color of walls or accents in textiles.”

Kathy, founder of Kathy Decorates Homes, adds, “Using light colors and mirrors can make your apartment feel more spacious and airy, while strategically placed rugs can help define different areas. Embrace the charm of your layout and get creative with your space!”

Kim Ranjbar of suck the heads, a blog focused on all that is NOLA, shares an additional tip for railroad-style living. Kim writes, “Privacy is somewhat at a premium in a shotgun house, the only door inside our place is to the bathroom. But you can do things like incorporate screens and curtains between one room and the next into the decor, or just learn to wear prim pajamas when guests stay over for Mardi Gras.”

Maximizing space for pets

Living with a dog in a railroad apartment presents unique challenges, especially given the layout’s long, narrow rooms and lack of traditional walls. However, with some careful planning and smart design choices, it’s entirely possible to create a comfortable and functional space for both you and your furry friend.

John Walter, a doberman specialist from Doberman Planet notes, “Raising a large dog in a railroad-style apartment, even a high-energy driven dog breed like a Doberman, is certainly doable but does present a unique set of challenges particularly when it comes to mental stimulation and exercise. Most large breeds are working dogs that require both in significant quantities.

Puzzle toys that dispense food when interacted with — whether chewed, stepped on, or manipulated — take up minimal space while providing essential mental stimulation. Many offer adjustable difficulty levels to keep dogs consistently challenged.

For physical exercise, a flirt pole — a long pole with a rope and lure attached — is a great option for confined spaces, allowing dogs to engage in high-energy play. The long, narrow layout of a shotgun apartment also lends itself well to short games of fetch, providing quick bursts of activity in a straight line. That said, regular outdoor exercise is still essential, ensuring large dogs receive the physical activity, socialization, and mental stimulation they need beyond the limits of any indoor space.”

Joey Lusvardi, a certified cat behavior consultant at Class Act Cats, speaks on living with a cat in this unique layout. Joey says, “Railroad-style apartments require creativity if you have cats in order to meet their environmental needs.

You can maximize your space by using scratchers or climbing objects mounted to the walls or using combination furniture that meets the needs of you and your cat. You may need to repurpose things that aren’t intended for cats in some cases. For example, using a console table is a great way to add vertical space for your cats in a narrow hallway while not taking up much walking space.”

Organization tips for maximizing space

Maximizing organization in a railroad apartment is necessary to making the most of its narrow, open layout. With rooms connected in a straight line, it’s easy for clutter to accumulate and disrupt the flow of the space. Effective organization not only helps maintain a tidy home but also enhances functionality, making each area more practical and enjoyable to live in.

Be sure to declutter regularly since railroad apartments tend to have limited space. Be aware of what you bring into your home and regularly reassess your belongings. Items that are no longer needed or used should be donated, sold, or discarded to prevent unnecessary buildup. This will keep your apartment feeling fresh and organized.

Wrapping up

Living in a railroad apartment has its unique challenges, but with the right strategies, you can turn its narrow, open layout into a cozy and functional home. By thoughtfully organizing your space and incorporating multi-functional furniture, you can maximize every square inch.

Whether you’re working with pets, managing privacy, or simply looking for ways to enhance your living area, the key is to embrace the apartment’s unique design and make it work for your lifestyle. With a little creativity and planning, your railroad apartment can become a space that feels both spacious and inviting.

HBO’s “The White Lotus” captivated audiences not only with its sharp social commentary and drama but also with its breathtaking filming locations. The lavish resorts, rich cultural influences, and luxurious interiors make each season a visual masterpiece.

Whether you’re decorating a stylish loft apartment in Chicago, a cozy rental in Portland, or a sunlit home in Miami, the right decor can completely elevate your space. No matter your location or living situation, drawing inspiration from the iconic destinations of “The White Lotus” can transform your home, adding warmth, texture, and personality.

“The White Lotus” and its cultural impact

Beyond its stunning visuals, “The White Lotus” has had a profound cultural impact. Aside from the social media takeover that follows each week’s new episode, the show’s exploration of wealth, privilege, and social dynamics has sparked discussions about class disparities and the ethical dilemmas of luxury tourism. With each season set in a different high-end resort, the series exposes the tensions between guests seeking escapism and the local communities that serve them. The power of the show comes with its ability to bleed into the social feeds of both avid watchers and those who have never watched.

This juxtaposition of beauty and underlying critique has influenced interior design trends as well. The show’s aesthetics — whether the historic charm of Sicily, the breezy luxury of Hawaii, or the serene sophistication of Thailand — have inspired an interest in destination-inspired home decor. People are now more eager to incorporate global influences into their living spaces, seeking not just luxury but also authenticity in those cultures featured.

“When ‘The White Lotuspremiered a few years ago, I was immediately taken with the cinematography and vibe of the show,” Jacki with Valley Of Oh explains. “To put it simply, it felt like an Instagram filter had been placed over real life. This vibe extended into that summer… and eventually the rest of my life. Flash forward to earlier this year, when I was struck with a bolt of inspiration to redecorate my half bathroom. Armed with nothing more than a box of flowers, a glue gun, and Cristobal Tapia de Veer’s impeccable score, I got to work. I channeled the resort from season one, heavy on flowers, calming tones, and relaxation… something very few of the families on the actual show got to experience. In each season of ‘The White Lotus’, Mike White does an incredible job of bringing the outdoors inside and that is what I attempted to replicate on a smaller scale in my own bathroom.”

Tropical tranquility: Hawaiian resort luxury (Season 1: Hawaii)

Filmed at the Four Seasons Resort Maui, Season 1 embodies Hawaiian tropical luxury blended with sophistication.

1. Natural and organic materials

The Hawaiian aesthetic embraces nature with materials like rattan and bamboo furniture for a breezy, island-inspired feel. Teak wood accents in coffee tables, bed frames, or shelving and linen and cotton fabrics for light, airy drapes and upholstery.

2. Soft, coastal-inspired color palette

To channel the beauty of the ocean and sky, use sandy beiges and taupes as neutral bases. Seafoam greens and soft blues complement these neutrals while emulating coastal waters.

3. Lush tropical accents

“Infuse your home with the luxurious aesthetic of ‘The White Lotus’ by drawing inspiration from its iconic Four Seasons locations. Channel Maui’s serenity with vibrant Missoni textiles, lush greenery, and rattan furniture reminiscent of the Four Seasons Resort Maui,” Stefan with Continental Traveller Blog. Textures like woven rugs, baskets, and wall hangings serve as stylish accents for spaces as well.

4. Open and airy spaces

Hawaiian interiors embrace openness and natural light, so consider sheer curtains or no window coverings to maximize light. When creating a more open space, lean into minimalist furniture arrangements that promote relaxation and spaciousness.

Sicilian elegance: Opulence and old-world charm (Season 2: Sicily)

Set in the stunning San Domenico Palace in Taormina, Sicily, Season 2 of “The White Lotus” showcases interiors that balance grandeur with historical elegance.

1. Rich, sun-soaked color palette

Sicilian interiors are known for their warm and earthy hues that evoke the Mediterranean landscape. To capture this essence, opt for terracotta walls or accents, ochre and mustard yellow tones, and deep olive greens to represent the lush countryside and vineyards.

“Focus on blending laid-back luxury with local character. Incorporate Mediterranean or tropical tones depending on the season featured — warm terracottas and lush greens for Sicily,” Anna with Besides the Obvious details. “Use curated, mismatched décor that feels both elegant and personal, like vintage art or artisanal ceramics. The key is creating a space that feels like an upscale escape, yet relaxed and effortlessly stylish.”

Antonella Ravidà with My Personal Sicily reiterates the beauty and importance of color when channeling the Sicilian style in your home. “As a Sicilian travel expert, I loved ‘The White Lotus’ season 2, filmed in Sicily, for its luxurious villas and warm Sicilian design featured in each episode! To bring that vibe home, go for warm terracotta tones, deep blues, and soft neutrals. Add hand-painted Sicilian ceramics, vintage-style lighting, and colorful details. Keep things breezy with linen fabrics and rustic wood accents to balance elegance with that effortless, vacation-like feel.”

2. Mosaic and tile accents

Sicily is famous for its intricate tile work and mosaic art. “To capture the essence of season two, I suggest a motif that includes classic hand-painted tile designs sporting royal blue and white (like the poolside decor at Taormina’s San Domenico Palace, where the show was filmed), anything with lemons on it, remarkable ceramics, specifically Sicily’s iconic Moor’s heads (Called “Testa di Moro” in Italian) and the island’s symbol of hospitality, a colorful ceramic pinecone,” Allison Scola, owner and curator of boutique tour operator Experience Sicily shares.

“In one of my past apartments outside of New York City, I covered the white kitchen tiles and stair risers with Sicilian tile decals I found online, and everyone thought they were authentic Sicilian tiles. Another idea for channeling the heart of Sicily is an item from the Bialetti coffee partnership with Dolce & Gabbana for a series of Sicily-folk-art-inspired coffee accessories. They are a great gift for a friend obsessed with the show. The blue and white tile-inspired one is perfect.

3. Ornate and antique-inspired details

Sicilian design leans into the grandeur of old-world European style.

“Imagine crossing the threshold of your home and rediscovering the luminous welcome of Sicily My Home villas: walls in delicate natural tones, accents of deep blue that whisper the magic of our crystal-clear sea, and precious details in handcrafted wood and natural fibers that infuse a relaxed and authentically Sicilian elegance. Bring the vibrant soul of our island into your daily life with touches of exclusive craftsmanship: hand-painted Caltagirone ceramics, narrating millenary stories with their vivid colors, precious linen and cotton fabrics that evoke the soft caress of the Mediterranean breeze, and wrought iron lamps that project suggestive shadows, recalling the intimate atmospheres of our charming residences,” Lucia Leontini with Sicily My Home shares.

Leaning into traditional Sicilian decor and traditions is a special way to bring the Italian vacation spot into your home. “Buying a locally made piece is a great way to add a touch of Sicily to your home. One of my favorite things about Sicily is that local artisans still use methods and traditions that have been passed down for generations,” Josh Scheer with White Lotus Travel Design explains.

“In Siracusa, there’s a woman who has been creating papyrus in the ancient way (papyrus still grows in Siracusa) for almost 50 years. Once the papyrus has dried, she paints local images on it and sells them in her shop. A Sicilian Moorish Head is another locally made item you can buy that will surely turn heads as well. Either way, you’re adding a nice splash of color to your home, supporting local artisans, and will have a bold and interesting conversation starter for years to come.”

The island’s rich ceramic tradition offers stunning options that blend history, artistry, and local craftsmanship.“One of the most evocative elements, to bring at home after a travel to Taormina, is Caltagirone ceramics, a world-renowned Sicilian tradition,” Gaetano Russo Truglio with Sicily Vibe emphasizes. “The Testa di Moro vases, intricate and rich in history, serve as statement pieces. If you prefer vibrant, colorful ceramics, opt for De Simone pieces, which feature warm hues of red, yellow, green, and white. For a more refined and subdued style, Alessi ceramics offer a palette of blue, azure, white, and ochre yellow.

“Additionally, the expressive anthropomorphic flasks by Niccolò Morales bring a unique artistic touch, characterized by their striking human-like expressions. When selecting authentic ceramics, pay attention to the depth and brilliance of the colors — handmade pieces often exhibit subtle variations that distinguish them from factory-made products.”

4. Mediterranean greenery and florals

Sicilian villas are often filled with lush greenery and vibrant flowers. Bring this to life with potted olive trees, lemon plants, or bougainvillea vines (real or artificial) draped over balconies or walls.

Exotic Thai sophistication: A fusion of culture and serenity (Season 3: Thailand)

The third season of “The White Lotus” is set in Thailand and features a rich blend of tropical beauty and elegance.

1. Dark wood and gold accents

To mimic the grandeur of Thai interiors, incorporate teak wood furniture with intricate carvings or gilded details on frames, mirrors, and decorative objects. “Incorporate intricately carved teak furniture, silk throw pillows, and handwoven rattan accents,” Priya Florence Shah with Ahoy Matey shares. “Use a warm palette of gold, deep red, and earthy neutrals complemented by tropical plants like orchids or palms. Soft ambient lighting, lotus-shaped decor, and statement pieces like a Buddha statue or lacquered screen complete the look, transforming your space into a serene five-star retreat.”

2. Traditional Thai textiles and patterns

Thailand is known for its stunning handwoven fabrics, so try adding silk cushions or other decor pieces with traditional Thai patterns. “To bring the elevated Thai aesthetic of ‘The White Lotus’ into your home, lean into natural wood textures, earthy color palettes, and soft, intentional lighting,” Lauren Fowler with Travel Eat Sleep Repeat uncovers.

“Add a layer of indulgence with silk accents such as cushions, curtains, or throws that echo the refined touches seen at Anantara Bophut (one of the prominent filming locations in Koh Samui), where even the staff uniforms feature iconic Jim Thompson Thai silk. Thai-inspired design is all about balance and calm, so opt for thoughtful pieces that create a sense of warmth, peace, and quiet luxury.”

3. Lantern and mood lighting

As Lauren Fowler touched on earlier, Thai spaces glow beautifully with warm, ambient lighting, so use hanging lanterns made of silk or paper. You can also opt for soft, dimmable lighting to create a relaxing atmosphere or carved wooden lamps that cast intricate shadow patterns.

4. Indoor-outdoor connection

Thai architecture often blends the indoors with nature. “Bring the serene elegance of season 3’s setting into your home with natural textures, earthy tones, and artisanal craftsmanship,” Quintin with Yellow Leaf Hammocks details. “Woven rattan furniture, airy linen drapes, and a palette of deep ocean blues and lush greens evoke the region’s luxurious resorts. A handwoven yellow leaf hammock, crafted in Thailand, will add the perfect touch, transforming any space into a breezy, five-star retreat. Whether indoors or on a sunlit patio, it invites effortless relaxation with a hint of adventure.”

Add large plants like bird-of-paradise or bamboo to large corners in indoor and outdoor rooms. Outdoor seating areas with plush floor cushions bring a spa-like vibe to your home to complete the look.

Florals can serve as wonderful accents to brighten the room while inspiring biophilic design. “When I think of a luxe Thai design aesthetic, the following spring to mind: tall, lidded finial pots, lacquer furniture, intricate, hand-loomed textiles, ornate, often gilded wood carvings and those iconic blue and white, hand-painted ceramics…celadon pottery too. Lastly, great armfuls of vibrant magenta orchids with other tropical blooms strung and draped, lace-like, into sweet-smelling chains and garlands by deft, skilled fingers,” Annabel Smith with Designs By Origin explains. “Here’s how – team elegant lacquer furniture pieces – a sideboard, for example – with decidedly modern upholstery for a stylistic contrast. Group finial pots as a focal point in a niche or atop a sideboard and add drama with a downlighter. Frame colorful textiles as art for a unique ‘gallery’ wall. Use carved wood panels as wall art in the same way for a 3D effect. Traditional Thai tableware – think patterned serving bowls and dishes – looks beautiful across a ‘tablescape’ in combination with modern white plates and elegant stemware. Then it’s just a question of filling a sculptural, celadon vase with…orchids perhaps.”

Blending the “White Lotus” aesthetics

Each season of “The White Lotus” offers a distinct aesthetic, yet they share common themes of elegance, cultural appreciation, and luxury. “To bring ‘The White Lotus’ aesthetic into your home, embrace a blend of luxurious minimalism and bold, coastal-inspired accents. Opt for crisp white linens, natural textures like rattan and linen, and statement pieces in rich jewel tones or Mediterranean blues,” Katie Warner with Lucid Routes recommends.

“Incorporate vintage or artisanal decor — think handcrafted ceramics, sculptural lighting, and locally inspired artwork — to create an upscale yet relaxed ambiance. Finally, maximize natural light and add lush greenery for that effortlessly chic resort feel. As a travel professional, I’ve been fortunate enough to have stayed at each of the resorts featured in White Lotus. These were some items I brought back from Hawaii, Sicily, and Thailand for my home.”

Anna-Kai Tõrs with Baubauwall explains that staring at the walls is the easiest way to transport yourself to one of these beautiful locations.

“If you want your home to feel like a five-star escape, start with the walls. A mural wallpaper is the easiest way to bring in that White Lotus vibe – whether it’s a fairytale-like lemon grove that channels Sicily, lush tropical greenery for a Thai retreat, or ocean tones from Hawaii. Gorgeous mural wallpaper sets the mood instantly, and the rest – rattan chairs, linen curtains, maybe a vintage lamp – just falls into place. Think of wallpaper as your shortcut to vacation mode.”

Don’t shy away from taking elements of all locations to create a stunning, serene, and unique environment. “To bring The White Lotus aesthetic into your home, draw inspiration from each season’s stunning location. For a Hawaii-inspired retreat (Season 1), incorporate natural wood tones, breezy linen fabrics, and tropical greenery like monstera or palm plants to create a serene, island-like oasis. Sicily’s grandeur (Season 2) comes to life with terracotta hues, vintage Murano glass, and intricate tilework, evoking the elegance of Mediterranean villas. Thailand’s lush, exotic beauty (Season 3) can be reflected through carved teak furniture, silk cushions in jewel tones, and golden accents that capture the country’s rich cultural heritage,” Faye Bradley with CSP Times shares.

“The White Lotus” aesthetic: Bringing it home

To truly capture “The White Lotus” aesthetic, blend authenticity with luxury. Invest in high-quality materials, pay attention to texture, and curate spaces that feel both luxe and personal. Whether you’re dreaming of a Sicilian villa, a Hawaiian retreat, or a Thai sanctuary, these decor ideas will transport you to “The White Lotus” world — minus the drama.

From a chic apartment in New York City to a charming rental in Austin or a breezy home in San Diego, the right rug can completely elevate your space. No matter your location or living situation, a well-chosen rug can transform a space, adding warmth, texture, and personality.

However, with countless options available, selecting the right rug can feel overwhelming. From size and material to pattern and placement, here’s everything you need to know about choosing and styling the perfect rug for your home.

How to choose the right rug for a room: Key factors to consider

Finding the perfect rug goes beyond just picking a design you like. To ensure your selection fits seamlessly into your home, consider these essential factors before making a decision.

1. Consider the room’s purpose

Before selecting a rug, think about the purpose of the room. “A rug isn’t just a decorative piece — it’s the foundation of a space. When selecting a handmade, one-of-a-kind rug, start by considering the room’s size and function,” Mert Yilmaz with Rug N Carpet shares.

“Larger rugs help define open spaces, while smaller ones add character to intimate areas. The uniqueness of handmade rugs means no two are exactly alike, so embrace their individuality to bring warmth and authenticity to your home. Opt for natural materials like wool for durability and timeless appeal, and don’t be afraid to let the rug be the statement piece that ties everything together.”

2. Choose the right size

Size matters when it comes to rugs. “When selecting a rug, it’s best to start with the sizing, it needs to anchor the furniture, and it shouldn’t be too small or too big,” Beril Yilmaz, interior designer and architect with BY Design And Viz explains. “This is a common mistake, and the rug should extend under the key furniture pieces. Choosing the right material is also very important. For high-traffic areas, it’s better to use durable and stain-resistant materials to protect the rug.”

Size is extremely crucial in creating a balanced look. Avoiding common sizing mistakes ensures your rug not only complements your space but also enhances its overall flow and cohesion.

“Selecting the right rug is about more than just aesthetics; it’s about fitting your lifestyle, enhancing comfort, and promoting a healthier home environment. Start by choosing a rug large enough to anchor your furniture — typically, your seating area should comfortably sit on the rug or at least have the front legs on it,” explains Nathaniel with Eastern Oriental Rugs. “Natural fibers like wool or cotton are not only durable for high-traffic zones or households with pets and kids, but they also contribute positively to indoor air quality. Don’t shy away from layering rugs to add texture and visual interest, and always use a rug pad to maintain shape and safety.”

A carefully selected rug plays a crucial role in setting the tone for your space. Choosing the right size can be tricky, and getting it wrong may result in a cluttered appearance.

“Rugs are one of the easiest ways to give your space an instant facelift — especially if you are working with limited furniture. When choosing the perfect rug, one of the most common design missteps comes to size: too small, and the space feels disconnected; too large, and it may not transition well to your next home,” Krista Weisman, designer and owner of Intentional Design Company.

“A classic 8×10 is a versatile choice — it works beautifully in most living rooms with the front legs of your sofa and chairs on it, or under a bed to add cozy texture and warmth beneath simple linens. For high-traffic areas or homes with pets and roommates, opt for low-pile or washable rugs—they’re practical, durable, and easy to maintain. When it comes to trends, skip the investment in trendy furniture and let your rug do the talking. Rather than chasing furniture trends, keep your core pieces timeless and bring color, pattern, and personality into your space —without the long-term commitment.”

3. Select a material that fits your lifestyle

Rug materials impact durability, maintenance, and feel. Wool is soft, durable, and naturally stain-resistant, making it a great choice for living spaces. Cotton rugs are lightweight and easy to clean, perfect for casual spaces. Jute or sisal adds texture and an organic feel but can be rough underfoot. Synthetic fibers are budget-friendly and easy to maintain, ideal for high-traffic areas.

“In the realm of interior design, rugs serve as the foundation for creating inviting and comfortable spaces. However, maintaining the cleanliness of rugs can often be a daunting task. Enter washable rugs – the perfect solution for busy households and high-traffic areas,” Francesca with Easy Tot explains. “What really distinguishes machine washable rugs from traditional rugs is not quite the material, but rather the fact that washable rugs will actually fit inside a washing machine.”

“Lorena Canals’ washable rugs, designed in Spain and made in India, are constructed via a patented manufacturing method that is based on selecting a flexible base fabric which is composed of an open weave that allows the passage of the wool threads via traditional “tufting”. This is the secret behind Lorena Canal’s washable rugs line,” Francesca concludes.

4. Find a pattern and color that complements your décor

Rugs can be a statement piece or blend seamlessly into your décor. Fine artist Deirdre Dyson has been creating timeless and contemporary carpet designs over a period spanning two and a half decades, and she encourages readers to make a statement.

“Color choice is very subjective, and if you want to create an eye-catching talking point for your room go for a bold design with brighter colors. If your tastes are less dramatic you may want to go for neutral palettes or just a pop of colour which blends with your furniture and walls. You could also think about colour-graded carpets which work well if you are not keen on strong design. Offering a complete bespoke design service Deirdre’s inventive, hand-knotted carpet designs can be made to order from a palette of over 5,000 colours. Her new 2025 collection ‘Light Play’, focusing on color in its purest form, is available to view at deirdredyson.com.”

5. Layering for depth and interest

Layering rugs adds depth and warmth to a space. “Choosing the perfect rug starts with scale – ensure your rug is large enough to anchor your space, allowing at least the front legs of your furniture to rest on it,” Annemarie Willemen-Diephuis, founder and creative director with Hunter & Nomad Pty Ltd, echoes the sentiments of the tips above.

”For high-traffic areas, opt for durable, washable materials like cotton for easy upkeep. When it comes to color and pattern, let your rug set the tone – bold designs can become the statement piece, while neutral tones tie everything together effortlessly. Layering rugs is a great way to add texture and warmth, especially in open-plan spaces. Ultimately, a well-chosen rug should balance style and practicality, making your home feel both beautiful and livable.”

A larger, neutral rug can serve as a base, with a smaller, patterned rug placed on top for added visual interest.

6. Proper rug placement

Styling a rug correctly enhances its impact. In the living room, center the rug under the coffee table and ensure furniture legs are placed on or near the edges. For the bedroom, a large rug should be placed under the bed, or smaller rugs can be positioned on either side. In terms of a dining room, the rug should be proportionate to the table and allow for easy movement of chairs.

Sizing up can assist in guaranteeing perfect placement and visual proportions. “When selecting a rug for your space, it’s important to choose one that’s generous in size, ideally covering the entire area under your furniture. A rug that is too small can make the room feel incomplete or awkward, so take the time to carefully measure it to ensure it fits perfectly,” Alexandra with Studio Aem details.

7. Care and maintenance

To keep your rug looking fresh, vacuum regularly to prevent dust and dirt buildup. “Rugs not only add warmth and texture but also help ground the space, making it feel cohesive and complete,” Alexandra continues, “so to ensure durability and comfort, opt for natural fibers and materials, which offer long-lasting softness underfoot.”

Bringing it all together with the right rug

Choosing the right rug involves balancing style, functionality, and comfort. Whether you prefer a timeless neutral design or a bold statement piece, the right rug ties a room together and makes your space complete. With proper styling and care, your rug will remain a beautiful and functional part of your home for years to come.

The post How to Take Shelter in Your Apartment During a Tornado appeared first on The Rent. Blog : A Renter’s Guide for Tips & Advice.

]]>
When tornado season arrives, typically between April and July, every apartment resident needs to know where to go in a tornado.

Tornadoes don’t always come with a warning, and the worst of them can pack wind speeds of more than 300 miles per hour — tearing a home or building from its foundation. If you don’t have a basement, the natural question is where should you go during a tornado? How can you create a tornado shelter right in your own apartment?

knowing what to do during a tornado warning and avoid potential flying debris is imperative. The national weather service offers guidelines

Where to take shelter in your apartment during a tornado

Let’s review tornado safety for apartment dwellers, from where to take shelter during a tornado to what to do in your apartment during a tornado.

Where in your apartment complex should you take shelter during a tornado? Here are some basic safety tips:

Take cover as close to the ground as possible

The safest place to go in a tornado is always down — down in a basement, the first floor or a covered parking garage on the ground floor. If you live on the ground floor, great! If not, get to the lowest level of your apartment building immediately.

Apartment dwellers on higher floors should seek similar shelter. If there aren’t any options below ground, a neighbor’s ground-floor unit is the safest bet.

Also, if you live in a building with interior stairwells, you can go to the lowest floor and under the stairs to hide in a tornado.

Finding an interior hallway or just the lowest floor in your apartment building is safe during a tornado watch because these areas withstand winds

Pick your next best option — hide away from windows

If the storm is bearing down on your apartment complex, a tornado warning is in action — or you can’t go underground — the next safest place to seek shelter during a tornado is the furthest from the windows. This way you avoid the potential of flying debris. Choose an interior room, closet or hallway for a temporary tornado shelter.

Bathrooms are often considered safer for the plumbing structures that surround them. If you’re in a high-rise building and can’t get to the ground floor, get to the hallways in the center of the building and take shelter there until the tornado passes.

What to do during a tornado watch or severe weather: Protect your body

Whether you’re taking shelter in a basement or hiding in a bathroom to stay safe during a tornado, you have one thing to do: Protect your body. You can do this by covering your head and neck with your arms.

Get in the tub or closet and cover up with thick blankets, sleeping bags, pillows — even a whole mattress. These can help keep you safer in the event that debris begins to fly.

Bicycle helmets are also a great way to protect your head from possible injury if the roof or ceiling ends up compromised. It’s smart to keep a helmet in your apartment if you live in a tornado zone, especially if there’s no tornado shelter nearby.

During and after a tornado, you’ll want to protect your lungs from debris, so consider wearing a mask or protective face covering, too.

seek shelter even if unsure of how severe the tornado is. an interior room or interior hall is a good place to start

Know the signs of a tornado

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), there’s no substitute for staying alert to the sky when it comes to tornadoes. Here are some signs to look and listen for:

 • Strong, persistent rotation in the cloud base
 • Whirling dust or debris on the ground under a cloud base — tornadoes don’t always have a funnel cloud
 • Hail or heavy rain followed either by the dead calm of a fast, intense wind shift. Many tornadoes come wrapped in precipitation and can’t always be seen.
 • A loud, continuous roar or rumble, which doesn’t fade in a few seconds like thunder
 • At night: Small, bright, blue-green to white flashes at ground level near a thunderstorm (as opposed to silvery lightning up in the clouds). These mean power lines got snapped by very strong winds.
 • At night: Persistent lowering from the cloud base, illuminated or silhouetted by lightning — especially if it’s on the ground or there’s a blue-green-white power flash underneath.

knowing where your storm shelter is or where to seek help is important for when a storm arrives

Be prepared during peak season with a temporary tornado shelter

It’s important to have a plan for where to go during a tornado, even if you don’t live in an area where such storms are common.

Practice tornado drills with your family or roommates, and coordinate with neighbors and your apartment community’s management team. Find out ahead of time if there’s a public tornado shelter in your neighborhood. If there is, learn its location and the fastest route to get there.

Put together a tornado emergency kit that’s easy to grab and bring to your sheltering place when there’s a warning. You should include a battery-powered radio and flashlight, extra batteries, any prescription medications and a first-aid kit.

Make sure you have water — one gallon per person, per day, to last three days— non-perishable food, a manual can opener, baby formula and diapers, if applicable.

Pet owners should make sure to have food, water and other important items on hand for your furry friend, too. If you have a pet and see a tornado warning, it’s smart to get them in a harness and keep them on a leash so you can easily grab them and go.

Staying safe after a tornado

If there’s damage from the tornado, keep your family or group together and wait for emergency crews to arrive. If there are injuries, tend to victims carefully.

Debris is dangerous — there will likely be broken glass and sharp objects everywhere — so steer clear. Downed power lines could still be live with electricity. Don’t touch them or anything metal nearby!

If it’s dark, don’t use matches or lighters — gas lines may have leaked. Flashlights are the only safe option in the immediate aftermath of a tornado. Remain calm and call for help.

In today’s fast-paced world, creating a calm and serene environment in your home is more important than ever. A space that fosters tranquility can provide a sense of peace and refuge from daily stress. Designing a calm aesthetic requires intentional choices across various elements, from furniture and lighting to scents and personal touches. So whether you are looking at homes for sale in Seattle, already renting an apartment in Boston, or moving to a rental house in Little Rock, here’s a guide on the best ways to promote a calm aesthetic in your home.

Prioritize a breathable and open design

Open spaces and good airflow are key components of a calm aesthetic. Keep your home layout spacious, with open pathways and large windows that allow natural light to flow in. Hannah from JCP Holistic shared this recommendation, saying that “A well-ventilated, open space with natural light can drastically improve mental clarity and relaxation. Position furniture to allow for comfortable movement, ensuring the space feels inviting rather than restrictive.”

Hannah also promotes a focus on mindfulness and balance, adding that “A dedicated space for mindfulness, whether for meditation, journaling, or simply unwinding with a cup of tea, reinforces relaxation. Keeping this area clutter-free and incorporating natural elements like plants or stones fosters a sense of grounding and balance.” In addition to Hannah’s stellar suggestions above, it’s also advisable to style your space to encourage introspection and quiet time, which is essential for mental clarity and relaxation.

Scents and aromatherapy to promote a calm aesthetic

As mentioned earlier, scents play an essential role in setting a calm ambiance. Not only are certain scents useful to aid in comfort and relaxation, choosing the right candles, incense dispenser or diffuser can add aesthetic appeal to your home.

Kristen Jakobitz, experienced health coach with Kristen Jakobitz Health Coaching LLC, notes that “Creating a relaxing space starts with engaging your senses in a way that signals your body to unwind. Use calming scents like lavender or eucalyptus with essential oils or candles to set the mood, and opt for soft, warm lighting to create a soothing atmosphere. Incorporate a spot for herbal teas or infused water to encourage mindful hydration.”

Experiment with different scents and see which ones resonate with you and create the most peaceful atmosphere in your home, however, eucalyptus and lavender are popular choices, with Tatiana from The Onsen & Bloom Team also being a proponent of their use.

Tatiana adds that “If you want to create a truly relaxing space in your new home, start with scent. Aromatherapy has a way of instantly shifting the mood, whether it’s the calming scent of lavender to unwind, eucalyptus for a breath of freshness, or citrus to brighten your day. Try adding a diffuser or even aromatherapy shower steamers to make everyday moments feel like a spa escape. It’s a small touch that makes a big difference in how your space feels!”

Essential oils and candles are a great way to infuse your home with calming fragrances, but there are other options as well. Consider using fresh flowers or room sprays with gentle, soothing scents like jasmine, sandalwood, or rose.

Holistic home design that promotes a calm aesthetic

Design your space based on holistic principles

Considering the balance of elements such as light, space, energy, and materials is a great place to start when creating a calm aesthetic in your home. Amy Baratta from Holistic Home Designer is well versed on the subject, and notes that her “design philosophy for creating relaxing spaces centers on holistic principles. I begin by defining the space’s function and the feelings I want it to evoke, ensuring it harmonizes with the rest of the home.

My palette often features calming blues, greens, and warm earth tones, complemented by a variety of soft textures like cashmere throws, fur pillows, and kilim rugs. I also love incorporating warm wood furniture, such as a live-edge coffee table or a handcrafted wooden chair, to ground the space and add natural beauty.”

By creating a space that nurtures all aspects of your well-being — physical, mental, and emotional — you can cultivate a calming environment that enhances your overall quality of life.

Lighting, plants and music

Lighting, plants and music can not only add visually appealing elements to your space but also contribute significantly to a peaceful atmosphere. Natalie Pyrooz, spirit and nature-based living expert at Wild Heart Wellness shares the following tips to create a relaxation station, or home sanctuary:

Bring in the greenery: “Not only do living plants add an element of calming nature inside the home, but they clean and purify your indoor air, literally improving the quality of each breath you take! If you don’t have a lot of light, there are many affordable options for simple LED grow lights that can help your plants thrive. If you’re not a green thumb, try treating your space to a weekly bouquet of cut flowers to brighten it up.

Invest in nice lighting: You don’t have to spend an arm and a leg, but adding a variety of light sources to your home (think lamps, candles, string lights, track lighting) can make a huge difference in the feel of your space. Low lighting is a wonderful way to ease yourself into the evening and improve your ability to fall asleep.

Music sets the mood: Find a few playlists on your platform of choice that invite relaxation: whether they are nature sounds, calming music, or you could even get your own singing bowl. The frequencies of the sound we hear can play a big part in shifting our energy, so explore things that have a soothing effect on your nervous system.”

Peace lily to aid in promoting a calm aesthetic at home

Kamy from PURE Holistic is also a proponent of utilizing holistic elements in your home, adding that “Soft, warm lighting or Himalayan salt lamps can create a soothing ambiance, while gentle music, nature sounds or white noise help to drown out distractions. Introduce the soothing presence of water with a small tabletop fountain or an aquarium to enhance relaxation and flow. Lush greenery, such as aloe vera or peace lilies, can purify the air and bring a grounding energy to your space. Consider a cozy corner with a supportive chair, floor cushions or a yoga mat for meditation, stretching, or quiet reflection.”

We also advise that for lighting, table lamps, floor lamps, or pendant lighting with dimming options are ideal for setting a relaxing tone, while being mindful of plant placement can keep your space visually appealing — aim to keep them in areas where they can be admired without being overbearing.

Regular decluttering to maintain a tranquil environment

A cluttered space can quickly create a chaotic environment, so decluttering is essential when maintaining a calm aesthetic. Take time to regularly tidy up and organize your home, removing unnecessary items that do not serve a purpose. When carving out a relaxing corner for yourself, Heather Carota from Zen Zone Wellness Center suggests that you “Declutter a corner and have very minimal items in this space.

Items can include: a comfortable place to sit, calming lighting like a Himalayan salt lamp, a diffuser with an essential oil smell of your choice that calms you like lavender or maybe a citrus oil of sorts, and perhaps a plant to bring fresh oxygen and life to your space.” When decluttering, use storage solutions such as baskets, bins, or shelves to keep items neatly tucked away. The goal is to create a sense of spaciousness and simplicity in every room when promoting a calm aesthetic ideal for relaxation.

Add personal touches and artistic elements

Incorporating personal or artistic elements into your home’s design can add a sense of individuality and warmth. Display artwork, photographs, or objects that hold sentimental value to you. Surround yourself with pieces that inspire positive emotions or evoke memories of peaceful moments. This tip comes to us from Jessica Greiner, M.S., from Artful Mind, who shares that “Creating an inviting and relaxing space in your home begins with choosing a quiet area where you can unwind, free of clutter, intentionally selecting items that bring you joy.

Incorporate soft pillows and handmade chunky blankets for comfort, along with soothing scents, such as chamomile and lavender to promote relaxation. Add artistic elements, maybe a tactile art board to engage your senses, or a pencil and sketchpad to encourage creative expression.”

Also consider adding personal touches through handcrafted items or sculptures. Select artwork or decor that resonates with the calm aesthetic, such as abstract pieces in muted colors or nature-inspired themes.

Must-have accessories and appliances

Accessories and appliances can help support the calm aesthetic of your home while being both functional and decorative. Items like a white noise machine, a soft throw blanket, or a comfortable reading chair can enhance the overall atmosphere of tranquility. Sian Victoria, expert lifestyle, travel, and beauty blogger, shares their best accessories and appliances to consider to promote a calm aesthetic in your home below:

My cozy relaxation station includes a comfy armchair in the corner of my room and a footrest and blankets. When I need to unwind, I switch on a Himalayan salt lamp; it’s kinder on the eyes and tells my mind it’s time to relax. I’ll sip a warm drink with 100% cacao powder and Barista oat milk for an antioxidant boost and light a soy lavender candle, which helps make me sleepy and calm. I’ll either watch TV, read a book or doodle. When it is time for bed, as I’m a light sleeper, I’ll wear an eye mask and switch on a rain sound machine to minimise disruptions. I then sleep on a satin pillowcase to benefit my skin and hair. Sian Victoria

Make sure that the accessories you choose complement the overall calming theme of the space. Opt for minimalist designs and neutral colors that seamlessly blend into the environment to create the ultimate aesthetic appeal.

Tea area in home to promote a calm aesthetic

Multi-use furniture and food/drink options

Multi-use furniture can help make the most of your space while keeping it clutter-free, and a dedicated area for preparing and enjoying tea or snacks can contribute to your home’s calm aesthetic. Whether it’s a small tea station in the kitchen or a cozy corner for enjoying your favorite hot beverage, having a space where you can unwind with a cup of tea promotes relaxation. Dr. Lara May shared this tip with us, and elaborates on how to transform your home into a personal oasis: “Start with calming scents, complemented by mood lighting from soft lamps or Himalayan salt lamps.

Incorporate multi-use furniture, such as a cozy meditation cushion for mindfulness moments and a comfy tea corner for reading. Don’t forget to create a small altar with crystals and candles to enhance your space’s energy. Lastly, ensure a healthy food corner and a tea station are close at hand to nourish your body and spirit. With these thoughtful additions, you’ll cultivate a serene atmosphere perfect for unwinding after a long day.”

Multi-use furniture such as a sofa bed, fold-out desks, or storage ottomans provides both functionality and style, and calming herbal teas like chamomile, mint, or valerian root, which can help soothe the mind and body. Consider incorporating a stylish tea set or jars of loose-leaf tea.

home with matching colors

Incorporate natural elements and matching colors

Natural fibers like cotton, linen, wool, and jute can create a tactile connection to nature and promote a sense of calm. Incorporate these materials into your bedding, rugs, cushions, and curtains for a soft, grounding effect. Natural fibers not only look beautiful but also feel comfortable and breathable, which adds to the overall sense of relaxation in your home.

Karena Zolner, executive director at Tulum Wellness Spa advises to “Design your meditation space with intention” and suggests selecting “colors that evoke serenity, like soft blues and greens, and introduce natural textures through woven textiles or bamboo accents. Begin with soft, warm lighting and the gentle aroma of lavender or sandalwood. Incorporate natural elements like smooth stones or small plants to ground your energy. Finally, choose a comfortable cushion or mat, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the present moment.”

Additionally, color plays a significant role in creating a harmonious and calm aesthetic in your home. Stick to a cohesive color palette that promotes tranquility, and avoid harsh or overly vibrant colors that can overstimulate the senses. Carmen Alfaro, owner of Meditation Room Supplies shares some best practices when choosing calming colors for your home:

“Make sure that everything matches so it’s pleasing to the eyes, which in turn will help relax your body and mind. Most popular relaxing combinations can be a neutral color such as a beige with a softer or muted color for contrast.”

In addition to the above color combinations, Carmen advises acquiring “a soft, fluffy rug that matches with the pillow on the seating to define the relaxation station area. Not only will this create a cohesive look, but you can also use the rug to play with your pets, children, or lay down to do some stretches to relax the body.

For example, beige and sage green are very popular. This combination works whether you have a boho, rustic or farmhouse decor style. Other color combinations can be light gray and white, most popular for modern and Scandinavian decorations.”

Another great way to promote relaxation at home is to meditate. Check out this great page on creating a meditation corner to learn more!

Create a calm environment in your bedroom

Your bedroom should be a sanctuary for rest and relaxation. This space is where you begin and end each day, so it’s essential that it promotes comfort and a calm aesthetic. Choose soft, neutral colors such as muted greys, pastels, or whites for the walls and bedding. Opt for simple, streamlined furniture that doesn’t overwhelm the space.

When it comes to promoting comfort, note that “Comfort is personal, and the best way to create a truly relaxing bedroom is by making sure your mattress fits your body type and sleep position needs,” shares Ryan Poppie, president and chief bedmaker at The Beloit Mattress Company.

Ryan adds that “For couples, I always suggest split mattresses with adjustable bases — each person gets the support they need without compromise. Even small changes, like using separate sheets and comforters, can make a huge difference in “minimizing sleep disruptions.” And of course, breathable, high-quality bedding helps regulate temperature for an even better night’s sleep. When your sleep setup is dialed in, you wake up feeling your best — every single day.”

You should also consider adding a comfortable rug to create warmth and texture underfoot, and incorporate soft lighting options like table lamps or wall sconces to create a soothing ambiance.

Creating a calm aesthetic in your home: Wrapping up

With thoughtful consideration of these elements, you can create a home that promotes calmness and tranquility.
