The world of “The Last of Us” might be bleak, but its characters are layered, emotional, and uniquely compelling — perfect muses for interior design inspiration. Whether you were introduced to the story through the groundbreaking video game or the beautifully crafted HBO series, each character has a strong sense of identity that can be reimagined through design.

Think exposed brick and salvaged wood in a Jackson cabin home, moody concrete textures in a Salt Lake City loft, or rugged leather seating in a Seattle rental. These design elements reflect the resilience and raw beauty found in “The Last of Us” characters; they’re gritty yet grounded, and functional yet full of feeling.

Ellie: Industrial eclectic

Ellie’s personality blends toughness, creativity, and emotional depth, and her interior style would do the same. A space inspired by her would have industrial bones: exposed brick, steel details, and distressed finishes. But it wouldn’t be cold. The warmth comes in through worn-in vintage furniture, layered textiles, and personal artifacts.

“Whether it’s the video game or the television series, The Game of Nerds has always been a huge fan of Ellie. She’s a complex story wrapped up in a small package,” Shannon Parola, founder and creative content director of The Game of Nerds, shares. “In the show, Ellie’s story isn’t told chronologically, so we don’t begin to learn about her backstory until a few episodes in. It’s the way that her story is told that makes fans fall in love with her character and see how brave she truly is.

To bring this design style to life in your own space, start by embracing exposed materials like brick, steel, and concrete. Mix these elements with vintage and found objects, like thrifted furniture, old records, and unique artwork. Adding on layered textiles in deep green or mustard hues will soften the harshness of industrial pieces.

Henry: Transitional

Henry’s space would reflect a transitional style — blending the old with the new, just like he balances survival instincts with deep emotional intelligence. His design sense would be clean and practical, but not cold, and blend classic and modern elements to give his home a steady, reliable feel.

“Being one of the few characters with an adult-child dynamic, Henry will go to the ends of the earth to shield his younger brother, Sam, from the ever-present chaos and terror looming around each corner,” Anthony Culinas, writer and editor of The Beta Network, explains. “Even if he doesn’t give Sam a break (let him play with the toy, come on), his eventual trust of Joel and Ellie mirrors how familial love can drive strength, responsibility, and sheer desperation.”

When it comes to decor, think a palette built on soft grays, warm wood tones, and functional furniture. Thoughtful touches like framed hand-drawn art or a shelf of well-worn books bring warmth to an overly functional space, helping those who inhabit it feel safe.

Joel: Rustic minimalism

Joel’s home would feel grounded and utilitarian, with a strong sense of place. Think rugged, masculine materials like dark-stained wood, aged leather, and iron hardware. A palette of earthy browns and muted greens keeps the look understated, while the overall design stays functional. Nothing in the space is purely decorative, and every item has a history or purpose.

This layout is no-nonsense, much like minimalism, with solid wood furniture that prioritizes function over flair. When bringing a rustic minimalist space to life, keep the lighting warm but low, casting long shadows across the room. Subtle details, like a vintage map on the wall or an old photo, encourage reminiscing about old times.

Abby: Contemporary

Abby, recently introduced to fans of the series, brings strength, discipline, and precision. Her interior style would reflect that mindset with sleek, performance-driven design. Clean lines, cool tones, and a focus on function define the space. Minimalist furniture, integrated storage, and a home gym corner would all fit naturally. This is a space designed for movement and focus, not clutter.

Abby stands out because she is immensely physically strong and yet emotionally complex. She is shaped by trauma, but capable of growth and compassion,” Lucas Kelleher with the Kelleher Bros. explains. “Abby’s arc in ‘The Last of Us: Part II’ shows the character evolving, and — unlike Ellie — she can recognize the cycle of vengeance and eventually let it go. We don’t get enough buff female powerhouse, and Abby is a great one.”

When channeling contemporary aesthetics in your own home, start with a neutral color palette like cool grays, blacks, and whites. After neutralizing your color palette, choose furniture that’s both sleek and functional. Go for modular pieces that are adaptable to different needs, such as multi-purpose tables, storage solutions, and open shelving. Accessorizing with subtle metallic accents, like brushed steel or chrome fixtures, gives the space a modern, industrial edge. Keep the space open and uncluttered, creating a calm, performance-driven environment that allows you to focus on what matters most.

Bill: Survivalist vintage

Bill’s style is all about preparedness layered with surprising depth. His space would be utilitarian at first glance. Full of stocked shelves, reinforced doors, and makeshift tools within reach. But look closer, and you’d see warmth beneath the surface: retro radios, worn-in furniture, and mid-century touches that hint at sentimentality and a life lived before survival took over.

‘On the surface, Bill is your textbook doomsday prepper. His bunker houses all the food, toiletries, gadgets, and gizmos he could need to survive the Cordyceps outbreak,” David Silbert, founding editor of The Punished Backlog, explains. “His demeanor, not to be outdone, is cold, callous, and calculating. Yet, underneath it all, Bill is a person of warmth and compassion — one who supported his partner, Frank, until the very end. He is a tragic example of what loss can do to a human, but also a perfect example that humanity does not easily fade away.” Bill proves that resilience and design don’t have to be at odds.

To create a similar vibe, focus on practicality, like reinforced doors, steel shelving units, and plenty of storage for supplies. Incorporate vintage elements like a 1970s radio, old maps, and retro lighting to add warmth and personality. Personal mementos, such as old photos or a cherished item passed down, create a more intimate atmosphere within the otherwise pragmatic space.

Tommy: Western

Tommy’s style leans toward a traditional, rustic aesthetic with Western influence. A cabin-style interior, with raw wood finishes, Southwestern textiles, and a central hearth or fireplace, suits him. His space would likely feature symbols of legacy: framed photographs, family relics, and handcrafted pieces. It’s grounded in nostalgia but built for real living.

“Tommy is my favorite character from ‘The Last of Us’ (primarily the game) because of his loyalty, leadership, and survival skills in the second game,” Papa Minnow, chief content creator of Pops Culture, details. “Despite having a fallout with his younger brother Joel, Tommy puts their differences aside to help Joel during his time of need and rekindles their relationship, displaying a level of loyalty that puts family first. Without spoilers, Tommy also shows a determination to achieve his ultimate goal as an expression of love that is so fundamentally human it makes him very relatable and understanding despite his unethical behavior.”

To bring this style to life, start with rich wood tones: oak, pine, or reclaimed barn wood for furniture, paneling, and shelving. Layering cozy textiles like plaid flannel throws and woven wool rugs creates a true Western atmosphere in conjunction with rich wood tones. Lastly, a stone fireplace or wood-burning stove would anchor the room, providing both warmth and a natural focal point.

Clickers: Organic brutalism (if you’re brave enough)

Inspired by the infected rather than the survivors, this one’s for fans of conceptual design. Clicker-inspired interiors take cues from organic brutalism, a design style rooted in nature reclaiming structure. Picture moss-covered surfaces, sculptural lighting that mimics spores, and decayed elegance. It’s a bit scary and immersive, but in a strangely beautiful way.

While the clickers are both terrifying and fascinating, organic brutalism is the opposite. To implement this aesthetic, incorporate statement pieces like a monolithic coffee table or a live-edge wood bench to reflect the raw power of nature reclaiming space. Then add biophilic elements like dried botanicals, mossy greens, or fungal-inspired ceramics to nod to the world of “The Last of Us” (without crossing into horror-movie territory).

Designing through The Last of Us characters

Every one of “The Last of Us” characters carries a specific emotional tone — something that can inspire intentional, character-driven interiors. Between Ellie’s expressive grit and Joel’s quiet strength, there’s a design style that channels each and every quality into your space. It’s about more than just aesthetics, it’s about storytelling through design.

Butter yellow is having a moment beyond just your Pinterest feed. This shade is popping up everywhere from Timothée Chalamet’s surprise Oscars look to Sabrina Carpenter’s soft yellow mini at the Governors Ball. Versace even anchored its Spring 2025 collection with it, proving butter yellow isn’t just a seasonal fling – it’s a full-blown style statement.

The best part? It’s translating beautifully from fashion into interiors. Butter yellow color is soft, warm, and nostalgic without feeling dated. It’s a color that brings light into a room without taking over the entire space. Think subtle sunshine and not screaming lemonade. If you’ve been looking for a fresh, comforting hue to work into your home, this is the one to watch. Think a yellow statement wall in an Atlanta home, a fuzzy yellow rug in a Charlotte apartment, or even butter-yellow kitchen chairs in a New Orleans rental home. Butter yellow is a color that fits anywhere while still standing out.

Why the butter yellow color works

What makes butter yellow color different from other yellows is its softness. It doesn’t shout. It glows. It’s that dreamy middle ground between pastel and punchy, offering warmth without overwhelming the senses.

“Butter yellow is having a major moment this season, making waves in both fashion and interior design,” Alex Carlier, founder of MyColorAnalysis AI, details. “After shining in Prada’s and Jacquemus’ latest Spring/Summer 2025 collections, this warm, sophisticated hue translates beautifully into home spaces. At My Color Analysis AI, we particularly love how it works wonders with crisp whites for a fresh look, soft grays for modern elegance, and deep navy for that perfect pop of contrast. What makes butter yellow special is how it brightens up north-facing rooms while creating a calming, stress-reducing atmosphere – it’s cheerful without being overwhelming, making it perfect for today’s need for comforting spaces.”

Interior design-wise, butter yellow is versatile. “Butter yellow works well in any setting because it adds cheerful vibes to every room. The interior design world has adopted this color because it complements both bold and neutral color schemes,” Rachel Bustin with Home in the Pastures uncovers. “The combination of butter yellow with deep blues or earthy greens will help you build a balanced and welcoming environment.”

The flexibility extends into interior design styles, whether you’re into vintage charm, Scandinavian minimalism, or cozy cottagecore, this color can flex to fit your vibe. “Butter yellow is the standout shade of 2025, bringing a soft, nostalgic glow to interiors,” Philip Booth with J and P Hats explains. “Designers are embracing it as the new neutral, using it in everything from color-drenched walls to statement furniture and retro-inspired accents. Its versatility allows it to pair effortlessly with earthy tones, muted blues, or bold patterns, making it ideal for both minimalist and maximalist aesthetics. Whether through a buttery velvet armchair or a sunlit kitchen backsplash, this hue adds a cheerful yet grounded warmth to any space.”

Easy ways to use a butter yellow color at home

You don’t have to repaint an entire room to lean into this trend. Small shifts can have a big impact. Here’s how to bring in that buttery goodness:

Color drenching or statement piece

“Butter is the ultimate new neutral in this playful take on color. Bolder than beige, with a European edge and versatility at its core, butter yellow blends as seamlessly with cozy pastels as it does with an unexpected pop of red,” Becca Stern, co-founder and creative director of Mustard Made explains.

“With a timeless air and an undeniable nod to luxury, Butter is here to stay and is perfect for both renters and homeowners. Add this golden, sunny hue to the walls and experiment with color drenching, or if you’re limited with decorating, a statement piece of furniture or some carefully curated table-scaping accessories can work wonders to bring in this creamy shade.”

Textiles

Texture is an easy, beginner-friendly way to work yellow into your decor scheme. Swapping out your usual throw pillows or bedding for butter-yellow versions is a simple way to begin your butter-yellow journey.

“Butter yellow, with its gentle warmth and inherent optimism, offers surprising versatility in interiors. Its current popularity stems from a desire for comforting yet uplifting environments,” the team at the International Journal of Ayurveda Orientation shares. “To decorate effectively, consider using it as an accent wall for a subtle sunny touch or in textiles like throws and cushions for a cozy feel. Complementary palettes featuring soft greens, muted blues, or even contrasting charcoal can truly make this soft yellow shine.”

Aside from textiles and throws, other textures can soak up butter yellow beautifully. “Butter yellow is a soft yet fresh hue that truly comes to life through texture. Explore styling this color in your home through different materials, such as linen, silk, or wool, as your experience of the color can vary according to the fabric you choose,” Fifi with Curate Your Style. “You can style butter yellow with grey, dusty blues, or navy, or, with pink to add vibrancy to your living space.”

Small decor items

Butter yellow is such a fresh, joyful hue, and one of our favorite ways to use it is through unexpected details that quietly brighten a space. Molly Lucas with Maison de Molly continues, “Think picture frames, vases, sculptural objects, or even painted trim and baseboards. It brings warmth without overwhelming a room and pairs beautifully with soft blue grays, dusty teals, muted olive greens, and warm whites. These subtle, curated touches allow renters and homeowners alike to embrace the trend without a full commitment — it’s like adding a bit of sunshine exactly where you need it.”

Leaning into decor styles

Butter yellow naturally appears in design styles like cottagecore and French country, adding warmth to vintage pieces and soft neutrals. It also brightens mid-century modern and retro spaces, offering a cheerful pop in kitchens and accents.

“Yellow is a cheerful color for any space. It can be used as a neutral or a statement color. I enjoy using soft buttery yellow which lends to a creamy neutral. Its softness makes it easy to layer and gives a European Cottage feel,” ANG and JOEY explain.

Pairing with other colors

As other experts touched on earlier, pairing butter yellow is flexible, fun, and simple.

The color combinations are endless, as this yellow shade can serve as a neutral. “Butter yellow is a breath of fresh air — it radiates warmth, optimism, and a touch of nostalgia, making it a perfect choice for brightening up modern interiors. I love using it in kitchens, reading corners, or even cabinetry, where it adds character without overwhelming the space. It’s wonderfully adaptable: pair it with warm wood tones, soft whites, or muted greens for a calm, natural look, or introduce bolder accents like navy, terracotta, or dusty rose for a more playful edge. It’s that rare color that feels both comforting and current — perfect for anyone looking to bring joy and personality into their home,” Jessica Langco with Sara Carroll Design details.

Butter yellow in different rooms

This creamy yellow shade is sure to complement any room. “Butter yellow is such a beautiful shade of color. Use it to literally brighten and bring warmth,” Stacee Amos with The SugarApple explains. “Use it in the kitchen with dish towels or dinnerware, in the bathroom or bedroom with lamp bases or linens, and in the living area with storage baskets and blankets. This shade will bring joy to any room.”

  • Living room: A butter-yellow armchair or lamp adds warmth and breaks up cooler tones.
  • Kitchen: Try butter-yellow bar stools or tile backsplashes for a vintage yet modern feel.
  • Bedroom: This color is perfect for duvet covers or curtains, creating a calm, cozy backdrop for rest.
  • Bathroom: A pop of butter yellow in towels or bath mats adds cheer without clashing with neutrals.

Regardless of where you place butter yellow, it’s sure to shine. “Butter yellow brings a soft, sunny glow that makes any room feel warm and welcoming,” Anastasiia Stepanova, founder of Dressika, an AI-powered color analysis app, explains. “It’s perfect for brightening up small spaces like bathrooms or entryways, and adds charm to kitchens and dining areas. Pair it with light woods, white accents, or soft greys to keep the look airy and modern.”

A fresh take on color

Butter yellow color isn’t trendy in the flash-in-the-pan sense. It’s understated, nostalgic, and easy to love. It brings light and personality to spaces that need a little lift, and unlike more saturated yellows, it doesn’t dominate.

If you’ve been looking for a subtle way to shift the mood in your home, butter yellow is a solid choice. Warm, welcoming, and a little unexpected. It’s one of those colors that feels like it’s always been there — even when it’s brand new to your space.

HBO’s “The White Lotus” captivated audiences not only with its sharp social commentary and drama but also with its breathtaking filming locations. The lavish resorts, rich cultural influences, and luxurious interiors make each season a visual masterpiece.

Whether you’re decorating a stylish loft apartment in Chicago, a cozy rental in Portland, or a sunlit home in Miami, the right decor can completely elevate your space. No matter your location or living situation, drawing inspiration from the iconic destinations of “The White Lotus” can transform your home, adding warmth, texture, and personality.

“The White Lotus” and its cultural impact

Beyond its stunning visuals, “The White Lotus” has had a profound cultural impact. Aside from the social media takeover that follows each week’s new episode, the show’s exploration of wealth, privilege, and social dynamics has sparked discussions about class disparities and the ethical dilemmas of luxury tourism. With each season set in a different high-end resort, the series exposes the tensions between guests seeking escapism and the local communities that serve them. The power of the show comes with its ability to bleed into the social feeds of both avid watchers and those who have never watched.

This juxtaposition of beauty and underlying critique has influenced interior design trends as well. The show’s aesthetics — whether the historic charm of Sicily, the breezy luxury of Hawaii, or the serene sophistication of Thailand — have inspired an interest in destination-inspired home decor. People are now more eager to incorporate global influences into their living spaces, seeking not just luxury but also authenticity in those cultures featured.

“When ‘The White Lotuspremiered a few years ago, I was immediately taken with the cinematography and vibe of the show,” Jacki with Valley Of Oh explains. “To put it simply, it felt like an Instagram filter had been placed over real life. This vibe extended into that summer… and eventually the rest of my life. Flash forward to earlier this year, when I was struck with a bolt of inspiration to redecorate my half bathroom. Armed with nothing more than a box of flowers, a glue gun, and Cristobal Tapia de Veer’s impeccable score, I got to work. I channeled the resort from season one, heavy on flowers, calming tones, and relaxation… something very few of the families on the actual show got to experience. In each season of ‘The White Lotus’, Mike White does an incredible job of bringing the outdoors inside and that is what I attempted to replicate on a smaller scale in my own bathroom.”

Tropical tranquility: Hawaiian resort luxury (Season 1: Hawaii)

Filmed at the Four Seasons Resort Maui, Season 1 embodies Hawaiian tropical luxury blended with sophistication.

1. Natural and organic materials

The Hawaiian aesthetic embraces nature with materials like rattan and bamboo furniture for a breezy, island-inspired feel. Teak wood accents in coffee tables, bed frames, or shelving and linen and cotton fabrics for light, airy drapes and upholstery.

2. Soft, coastal-inspired color palette

To channel the beauty of the ocean and sky, use sandy beiges and taupes as neutral bases. Seafoam greens and soft blues complement these neutrals while emulating coastal waters.

3. Lush tropical accents

“Infuse your home with the luxurious aesthetic of ‘The White Lotus’ by drawing inspiration from its iconic Four Seasons locations. Channel Maui’s serenity with vibrant Missoni textiles, lush greenery, and rattan furniture reminiscent of the Four Seasons Resort Maui,” Stefan with Continental Traveller Blog. Textures like woven rugs, baskets, and wall hangings serve as stylish accents for spaces as well.

4. Open and airy spaces

Hawaiian interiors embrace openness and natural light, so consider sheer curtains or no window coverings to maximize light. When creating a more open space, lean into minimalist furniture arrangements that promote relaxation and spaciousness.

Sicilian elegance: Opulence and old-world charm (Season 2: Sicily)

Set in the stunning San Domenico Palace in Taormina, Sicily, Season 2 of “The White Lotus” showcases interiors that balance grandeur with historical elegance.

1. Rich, sun-soaked color palette

Sicilian interiors are known for their warm and earthy hues that evoke the Mediterranean landscape. To capture this essence, opt for terracotta walls or accents, ochre and mustard yellow tones, and deep olive greens to represent the lush countryside and vineyards.

“Focus on blending laid-back luxury with local character. Incorporate Mediterranean or tropical tones depending on the season featured — warm terracottas and lush greens for Sicily,” Anna with Besides the Obvious details. “Use curated, mismatched décor that feels both elegant and personal, like vintage art or artisanal ceramics. The key is creating a space that feels like an upscale escape, yet relaxed and effortlessly stylish.”

Antonella Ravidà with My Personal Sicily reiterates the beauty and importance of color when channeling the Sicilian style in your home. “As a Sicilian travel expert, I loved ‘The White Lotus’ season 2, filmed in Sicily, for its luxurious villas and warm Sicilian design featured in each episode! To bring that vibe home, go for warm terracotta tones, deep blues, and soft neutrals. Add hand-painted Sicilian ceramics, vintage-style lighting, and colorful details. Keep things breezy with linen fabrics and rustic wood accents to balance elegance with that effortless, vacation-like feel.”

2. Mosaic and tile accents

Sicily is famous for its intricate tile work and mosaic art. “To capture the essence of season two, I suggest a motif that includes classic hand-painted tile designs sporting royal blue and white (like the poolside decor at Taormina’s San Domenico Palace, where the show was filmed), anything with lemons on it, remarkable ceramics, specifically Sicily’s iconic Moor’s heads (Called “Testa di Moro” in Italian) and the island’s symbol of hospitality, a colorful ceramic pinecone,” Allison Scola, owner and curator of boutique tour operator Experience Sicily shares.

“In one of my past apartments outside of New York City, I covered the white kitchen tiles and stair risers with Sicilian tile decals I found online, and everyone thought they were authentic Sicilian tiles. Another idea for channeling the heart of Sicily is an item from the Bialetti coffee partnership with Dolce & Gabbana for a series of Sicily-folk-art-inspired coffee accessories. They are a great gift for a friend obsessed with the show. The blue and white tile-inspired one is perfect.

3. Ornate and antique-inspired details

Sicilian design leans into the grandeur of old-world European style.

“Imagine crossing the threshold of your home and rediscovering the luminous welcome of Sicily My Home villas: walls in delicate natural tones, accents of deep blue that whisper the magic of our crystal-clear sea, and precious details in handcrafted wood and natural fibers that infuse a relaxed and authentically Sicilian elegance. Bring the vibrant soul of our island into your daily life with touches of exclusive craftsmanship: hand-painted Caltagirone ceramics, narrating millenary stories with their vivid colors, precious linen and cotton fabrics that evoke the soft caress of the Mediterranean breeze, and wrought iron lamps that project suggestive shadows, recalling the intimate atmospheres of our charming residences,” Lucia Leontini with Sicily My Home shares.

Leaning into traditional Sicilian decor and traditions is a special way to bring the Italian vacation spot into your home. “Buying a locally made piece is a great way to add a touch of Sicily to your home. One of my favorite things about Sicily is that local artisans still use methods and traditions that have been passed down for generations,” Josh Scheer with White Lotus Travel Design explains.

“In Siracusa, there’s a woman who has been creating papyrus in the ancient way (papyrus still grows in Siracusa) for almost 50 years. Once the papyrus has dried, she paints local images on it and sells them in her shop. A Sicilian Moorish Head is another locally made item you can buy that will surely turn heads as well. Either way, you’re adding a nice splash of color to your home, supporting local artisans, and will have a bold and interesting conversation starter for years to come.”

The island’s rich ceramic tradition offers stunning options that blend history, artistry, and local craftsmanship.“One of the most evocative elements, to bring at home after a travel to Taormina, is Caltagirone ceramics, a world-renowned Sicilian tradition,” Gaetano Russo Truglio with Sicily Vibe emphasizes. “The Testa di Moro vases, intricate and rich in history, serve as statement pieces. If you prefer vibrant, colorful ceramics, opt for De Simone pieces, which feature warm hues of red, yellow, green, and white. For a more refined and subdued style, Alessi ceramics offer a palette of blue, azure, white, and ochre yellow.

“Additionally, the expressive anthropomorphic flasks by Niccolò Morales bring a unique artistic touch, characterized by their striking human-like expressions. When selecting authentic ceramics, pay attention to the depth and brilliance of the colors — handmade pieces often exhibit subtle variations that distinguish them from factory-made products.”

4. Mediterranean greenery and florals

Sicilian villas are often filled with lush greenery and vibrant flowers. Bring this to life with potted olive trees, lemon plants, or bougainvillea vines (real or artificial) draped over balconies or walls.

Exotic Thai sophistication: A fusion of culture and serenity (Season 3: Thailand)

The third season of “The White Lotus” is set in Thailand and features a rich blend of tropical beauty and elegance.

1. Dark wood and gold accents

To mimic the grandeur of Thai interiors, incorporate teak wood furniture with intricate carvings or gilded details on frames, mirrors, and decorative objects. “Incorporate intricately carved teak furniture, silk throw pillows, and handwoven rattan accents,” Priya Florence Shah with Ahoy Matey shares. “Use a warm palette of gold, deep red, and earthy neutrals complemented by tropical plants like orchids or palms. Soft ambient lighting, lotus-shaped decor, and statement pieces like a Buddha statue or lacquered screen complete the look, transforming your space into a serene five-star retreat.”

2. Traditional Thai textiles and patterns

Thailand is known for its stunning handwoven fabrics, so try adding silk cushions or other decor pieces with traditional Thai patterns. “To bring the elevated Thai aesthetic of ‘The White Lotus’ into your home, lean into natural wood textures, earthy color palettes, and soft, intentional lighting,” Lauren Fowler with Travel Eat Sleep Repeat uncovers.

“Add a layer of indulgence with silk accents such as cushions, curtains, or throws that echo the refined touches seen at Anantara Bophut (one of the prominent filming locations in Koh Samui), where even the staff uniforms feature iconic Jim Thompson Thai silk. Thai-inspired design is all about balance and calm, so opt for thoughtful pieces that create a sense of warmth, peace, and quiet luxury.”

3. Lantern and mood lighting

As Lauren Fowler touched on earlier, Thai spaces glow beautifully with warm, ambient lighting, so use hanging lanterns made of silk or paper. You can also opt for soft, dimmable lighting to create a relaxing atmosphere or carved wooden lamps that cast intricate shadow patterns.

4. Indoor-outdoor connection

Thai architecture often blends the indoors with nature. “Bring the serene elegance of season 3’s setting into your home with natural textures, earthy tones, and artisanal craftsmanship,” Quintin with Yellow Leaf Hammocks details. “Woven rattan furniture, airy linen drapes, and a palette of deep ocean blues and lush greens evoke the region’s luxurious resorts. A handwoven yellow leaf hammock, crafted in Thailand, will add the perfect touch, transforming any space into a breezy, five-star retreat. Whether indoors or on a sunlit patio, it invites effortless relaxation with a hint of adventure.”

Add large plants like bird-of-paradise or bamboo to large corners in indoor and outdoor rooms. Outdoor seating areas with plush floor cushions bring a spa-like vibe to your home to complete the look.

Florals can serve as wonderful accents to brighten the room while inspiring biophilic design. “When I think of a luxe Thai design aesthetic, the following spring to mind: tall, lidded finial pots, lacquer furniture, intricate, hand-loomed textiles, ornate, often gilded wood carvings and those iconic blue and white, hand-painted ceramics…celadon pottery too. Lastly, great armfuls of vibrant magenta orchids with other tropical blooms strung and draped, lace-like, into sweet-smelling chains and garlands by deft, skilled fingers,” Annabel Smith with Designs By Origin explains. “Here’s how – team elegant lacquer furniture pieces – a sideboard, for example – with decidedly modern upholstery for a stylistic contrast. Group finial pots as a focal point in a niche or atop a sideboard and add drama with a downlighter. Frame colorful textiles as art for a unique ‘gallery’ wall. Use carved wood panels as wall art in the same way for a 3D effect. Traditional Thai tableware – think patterned serving bowls and dishes – looks beautiful across a ‘tablescape’ in combination with modern white plates and elegant stemware. Then it’s just a question of filling a sculptural, celadon vase with…orchids perhaps.”

Blending the “White Lotus” aesthetics

Each season of “The White Lotus” offers a distinct aesthetic, yet they share common themes of elegance, cultural appreciation, and luxury. “To bring ‘The White Lotus’ aesthetic into your home, embrace a blend of luxurious minimalism and bold, coastal-inspired accents. Opt for crisp white linens, natural textures like rattan and linen, and statement pieces in rich jewel tones or Mediterranean blues,” Katie Warner with Lucid Routes recommends.

“Incorporate vintage or artisanal decor — think handcrafted ceramics, sculptural lighting, and locally inspired artwork — to create an upscale yet relaxed ambiance. Finally, maximize natural light and add lush greenery for that effortlessly chic resort feel. As a travel professional, I’ve been fortunate enough to have stayed at each of the resorts featured in White Lotus. These were some items I brought back from Hawaii, Sicily, and Thailand for my home.”

Anna-Kai Tõrs with Baubauwall explains that staring at the walls is the easiest way to transport yourself to one of these beautiful locations.

“If you want your home to feel like a five-star escape, start with the walls. A mural wallpaper is the easiest way to bring in that White Lotus vibe – whether it’s a fairytale-like lemon grove that channels Sicily, lush tropical greenery for a Thai retreat, or ocean tones from Hawaii. Gorgeous mural wallpaper sets the mood instantly, and the rest – rattan chairs, linen curtains, maybe a vintage lamp – just falls into place. Think of wallpaper as your shortcut to vacation mode.”

Don’t shy away from taking elements of all locations to create a stunning, serene, and unique environment. “To bring The White Lotus aesthetic into your home, draw inspiration from each season’s stunning location. For a Hawaii-inspired retreat (Season 1), incorporate natural wood tones, breezy linen fabrics, and tropical greenery like monstera or palm plants to create a serene, island-like oasis. Sicily’s grandeur (Season 2) comes to life with terracotta hues, vintage Murano glass, and intricate tilework, evoking the elegance of Mediterranean villas. Thailand’s lush, exotic beauty (Season 3) can be reflected through carved teak furniture, silk cushions in jewel tones, and golden accents that capture the country’s rich cultural heritage,” Faye Bradley with CSP Times shares.

If you’ve ever wanted your home to embody both the thrill of the open road and the relaxed charm of bohemian living, moto boho is your perfect aesthetic. Newer on the scene, this unique interior design trend merges rugged, motorcycle-inspired elements with the earthy, artistic sensibilities of bohemian decor. The result? A space that feels effortlessly cool, inviting, and deeply personal. Featured in Pinterest Predicts, this style is trending in both the fashion and interior design spaces making it a hot style to try this year.

Whether you’re personalizing a rental in Los Angeles, decorating an apartment in Phoenix, or styling your dream home in Austin, these expert tips will help you seamlessly bring the moto boho aesthetic into your space.

What is moto boho?

Moto boho is a fusion of two seemingly opposite styles. “Moto boho is where rebel meets wanderer — a style that’s as effortlessly cool as it is soulfully eclectic. Think of it as the love child of industrial grit and free-spirited bohemian flair,” Johanna Endres-Castillo, managing director of Speaking of Interiors Ltd, explains.

“Mix rugged textures like aged leather and distressed wood with soft, romantic accents like macramé or vintage lace to recreate the aesthetic. A moody yet feminine palette — deep charcoals, earthy neutrals, and blush tones — creates the perfect backdrop. And don’t be afraid to layer bold prints and statement pieces; moto boho is all about curated chaos with a touch of wanderlust.” This aesthetic isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about embracing a lifestyle that values adventure, individuality, and artistic expression.

Key elements of moto boho design

“Moto boho is all about mixing bohemian and biker aesthetics. Achieve the look by using a variety of textures in your home: woven textiles, shag rugs, leather furniture, and metal decor.” Ana Cvetkovic, Principal of Rowhome Design, Philadelphia’s premier interior design and home staging firm, shares. By incorporating these key elements, you’ll easily achieve this unique look in your home.

1. Industrial and vintage accents

Moto boho leans heavily into industrial materials like distressed metal, raw wood, and exposed brick. Vintage finds, like old gas station signs, weathered leather furniture, and retro motorcycle helmets, add authenticity to the aesthetic. “To create a moto boho feel, combine rich textures with layered patterns — think a vintage leather sofa paired with vibrant, handwoven rugs,” explains Mia with Xenos Jewelry. “Don’t be afraid to mix and match furniture styles, such as industrial metal pieces with eclectic bohemian decor, to capture that free-spirited, wanderlust vibe.”

2. Leather and worn textiles

Leather is a key material in this design style. Layering with textiles like handwoven rugs, macramé wall hangings, and fringed blankets keeps the space from feeling too harsh while bringing a vintage aesthetic to the space.

Moto boho interiors embrace natural materials, textures, and artisanal craftsmanship, creating a relaxed yet refined aesthetic,” Chiara Mennini, co-founder and head designer of Midsummer Milano. “This philosophy is reflected in our Top Bed System, where the Orange Fiber summer pads provide breathability and freshness, ensuring natural temperature regulation during warmer months.

For the winter season, layers of cashmere and wool offer warmth and comfort, working in harmony with Loro Piana Interiors fabrics — linen for summer, and cashmere-linen blends for winter — to enhance both luxury and functionality. These carefully selected materials create a sleep experience that evolves with the seasons, in perfect balance with nature.”

3. Dark, moody color palettes

Moto boho thrives in deep, moody tones like charcoal, espresso, oxblood, and navy. These colors create a sense of intimacy while complementing the staple rustic and industrial elements of the style. In contrast, warm earthy colors, such as burnt orange, rust, and mustard, add a cozy, contrasting touch.

4. Eclectic, personalized decor

One of the best aspects of moto boho is its emphasis on individuality. “Moto boho interior design fuses the untamed spirit of motorcycle culture with the eclectic warmth of bohemian living, creating a space that feels both adventurous and effortlessly cool. My home is filled to the brim with worn leather furniture, vintage textiles, metal accents, and a palette of deep earth tones, blacks, and sun-faded hues,” Angel Claw with Cult Boheme shares.

“Salvaged wood tables, retro signage, and collected travel artifacts bring a sense of history and freedom, while layered rugs, tapestries, furs, and plants soften the rugged aesthetic. This style blends seamlessly with bohemian, industrial, and vintage-inspired interiors, making it beyond easy to curate a space that feels personal and lived-in.

To embrace moto boho, mix bold statement pieces — like a weathered gas tank turned vase or lamp with a thrifted velvet armchair, and throw your favorite square scarf over a lampshade for good measure — with cozy textures and well-loved treasures, you’ll tell your story without speaking a word.”

5. Layer moto boho with other design styles

Interior design styles like cottagecore, bohemian, and industrial can seamlessly blend with moto boho by balancing rugged elements with soft, nostalgic touches. “The moto boho design trend for 2025 beautifully merges edgy elements with cozy comforts, creating a unique and inviting atmosphere in your home. Here are some ideas to fully embrace this trend in the cottage-core world: Stick to warm, earthy tones that complement leather, such as deep browns and burnt oranges. Incorporate muted neutrals to balance the overall look,” Tashia Creech with Country Cottage Interiors Online shares.

“Layer in oversized lace pillows and throws to soften the boldness of leather. Look for lace with intricate patterns or textures to create visual interest. Mixing in knitted or woven textiles can also add warmth. Combine leather with chunky knits, lace with metal, and wood with glass. This will create a dynamic and inviting space. You will have a moto boho sanctuary that feels both edgy and welcoming, perfect for relaxation and style.”

How to bring moto boho into your home

Embrace the raw, free-spirited essence of moto boho style by incorporating a mix of industrial grit and handcrafted charm. “Pair industrial elements like worn leather and metal with the softness of block-printed linen and cotton,” Chirag Khandelwal with Fabritual suggests. “Choosing warm, nature-inspired tones in block prints will complement the raw moto boho aesthetic as well. Lastly, combine printed fabrics with vintage rugs, macramé, and textured throws to create a cozy yet edgy space.”

  • Incorporate unique finds: Flea markets, thrift shops, and antique stores are great places to discover one-of-a-kind items that add character to your space.
  • Use functional decor: Storage solutions like metal lockers or wooden crates maintain the industrial feel while adding practicality.
  • Play with lighting: Edison bulb fixtures, wrought iron chandeliers, and warm-toned LED lighting enhance the moody atmosphere.

Where grunge meets artistry

Moto boho isn’t just a design trend, it’s an attitude. “ It’s all about blending industrial edge with bohemian eclecticism, creating a space that feels effortlessly curated yet deeply personal. The right artwork can tie it all together — think bold abstracts, vintage-inspired portraits, or pieces with rich textures and earthy tones,” Mio Asatani with Curina details.

“Taking advantage of an art rental subscription, as Curina offers, allows renters to experiment with different artworks without a long-term commitment. This makes it easy to refresh your space seasonally, keeping the adventurous, ever-evolving spirit of moto boho alive.” Whether you go all-in with a full redesign or simply introduce elements of the style, moto boho allows you to create a home that’s as bold and adventurous as you are.

The 2025 Academy Awards have brought together a striking selection of Best Picture nominees, each showcasing its distinctive design and unique aesthetic. From historical epics to musicals, the visual elements of these films play a crucial role in shaping their storytelling and emotional impact. Let’s explore the design choices that define this year’s top contenders and how we can apply those visuals to a rental home in Spokane, WA, an apartment in Rochester, NY, or a home in Fort Collins, CO.

2025 oscars best picture nominees were announced and predictions started flowing

Exploring the design of the 2025 Oscars Best Picture nominees

Whether it’s the lavishness of historical dramas, the chic minimalism of sci-fi worlds, or the cozy nostalgia of period pieces, cinema has a unique ability to dictate trends and redefine aesthetics. This year’s Oscars Best Picture nominees each bring a distinct visual identity, offering a glimpse into styles that may soon find their way into our homes.

All movie rating percentages are from Rotten Tomatoes. The scores indicate the percentage of audience and critics who enjoyed the film.

Emilia Pérez

Audience score: 17%

Critics score: 72%

Leading the nominations, “Emilia Pérez” captivates with a fusion of bold cinematography and intricate production design. The film’s aesthetic seamlessly blends contemporary settings with rich cultural influences, crafting a world that feels both grounded and theatrical. Every frame is thoughtfully composed, enhancing the narrative’s emotional depth with warm, earthy tones and deep contrasts that evoke intimacy and tension.

The Brutalist

Audience score: 80%

Critics score: 94%

“Writer/director Brady Corbet’s ‘The Brutalist,’ filmed in stunning VistaVision, follows Jewish-Hungarian architect László Tóth as he immigrates to America in the 1950s, seeking to resurrect his career in brutalist architecture,” Eric Zimmerman with Reel Opinion details. “The film presents enormous concrete and Italian Carrara marble constructions, with pillars dozens of feet high that entrap the viewer within Tóth’s monoliths and reflect the movie’s exploration of the dark heart of America. Tóth’s work balances minimalism and maximalism, exemplified by a library with towering bookshelves that retract into the walls, and its only furnishing is a chaise lounge positioned beneath a shaft of sunlight.”

Kyle A. Goethe, with GOAT Film Reviews, explains the thoughtfulness behind the production design, sharing the deeper meaning behind design choices. “Brady Corbet’s ‘The Brutalist’ is THE production designer’s dream of 2024. Chronicling a Hungarian-Jewist architect (played by Adrien Brody) who arrives in the United States to find the American Dream is always out of reach, this lengthy epic features some of the most unique and captivating architectural works of any recent film. The gargantuan concrete building at the film’s center evokes minimalist designs and coordination with natural light sources to create an awe-inspiring and ambitious project for its ambitious central character to pour all of himself into. This building, an institute, is similar to a blank slate, moving forward rather than back, much like its central character, a Holocaust survivor.”

This movie embraces stark architecture and moody lighting to underscore its themes of ambition and resilience, as Goethe explains. The film’s muted color palette and precise use of space create a sense of isolation that mirrors the protagonist’s journey. “One of the standout nominees for Best Production Design is ‘The Brutalist,’ which employs a minimalist aesthetic characterized by raw concrete structures and a muted color palette,” Jens Jacob with Saturation.io emphasizes.

“This design choice not only reflects the film’s somber narrative but also emphasizes themes of isolation and resilience. In home décor, incorporating elements of brutalism — such as exposed materials, clean lines, and functional design — can create a space that feels both modern and introspective, offering a unique blend of form and function.”

2025 oscars best picture nominees like Conclave are among the predictions for best original screenplay winner.

Conclave

Audience score: 86%

Critics score: 93%

A gripping political thriller set within the Vatican, “Conclave” thrives on its use of grandiose interiors and dramatic chiaroscuro lighting. The film’s design emphasizes the opulence and secrecy of its setting, creating a heightened sense of intrigue. Subtle but powerful production choices, such as intricate papal robes and cavernous, candlelit halls, reinforce the weight of its narrative. The dominant color palette consists of deep reds, golds, and blacks, symbolizing power and mystery.

Wicked

Audience score: 95%

Critics score: 88%

Bringing the beloved musical to the screen, ‘Wicked’ shines with a vibrant, magical aesthetic. Elaborate sets, whimsical costuming, and dynamic lighting work together to transport audiences to the magical land of Oz. “Bright colors and organic set pieces like flowers and fields planted just for the movie really brought the iconic world of Oz to life,” Lisa Dawn with The Princess Blog adds. “Unusual architecture including rotating bookshelves and doorless trains provide a constant reminder that this is not the same world we live in. The signature pink and green colors of the two main characters are reflected consistently through the film’s lighting, costumes, and environments.”

Bright, jewel-toned colors, along with a pink and green juxtaposition noted by Dawn, dominate the visual style, contrasting the whimsical and dark elements of the story while immersive camera work captures the grandeur of the performances. “‘Wicked’ has such a rich color palette, highlighting the complementary pink and green while still immersing viewers in a whimsical and vibrant world that includes every other color in between,” the team at In My Opinion Flicks explains. “‘Wicked’ is visually anything but plain and dull with its light, fluffy, and fantastical atmosphere. It trades straight lines and neutral colors for natural bends and bright, vibrant hues. ‘Wicked’s stylistic choices would translate beautifully into a fantasy-themed, otherworldy room. This approach draws from elements of the natural world and takes it up a notch. Colors are brighter and there are no sharp edges in sight.”

A Complete Unknown

Audience score: 96%

Critics score: 81%

This Bob Dylan biopic embraces a raw, organic visual style to capture the shifting cultural landscape of the 1960s and beyond. The cinematography relies on natural lighting and grainy textures to evoke a documentary-like authenticity, immersing audiences in Dylan’s world. The film’s design echoes the era’s countercultural movement, with warm sepia tones and soft-focus shots, lending a nostalgic feel.

2025 oscars best picture nominees like Dune Part Two are nominated in a few categories. The Dune team is predicted to take something home.

Dune: Part Two

Audience score: 95%

Critics score: 92%

Continuing the visually stunning saga, “Dune: Part Two expands upon its predecessor’s intricate world-building. “The production design of ‘Dune: Part 2’ is all in service of creating an atmosphere that is visually inhospitable and bleak, from the endless dunes to the rocky crags to the near-blinding whites and tans,” Kevin Jordan with Ruthless Reviews details. “Even the machines and structures used on the planet seem to be falling prey to the planet, as evidenced by the wear and tear seen on all surfaces caused by the unstoppable erosion of sand that is everywhere. But it also serves to show the defiance and strength of the natives of Arrakis, people who have not only overcome the hostility of the world but learned to use it to their advantage.”

Sand-toned hues, deep shadows, and high-contrast lighting enhance the film’s sense of vastness and danger, while intricate costume details highlight the blend of futuristic and archaic influences. “In ‘Dune: Part Two,’ the production design masterfully blends monumental architecture with intricate details to create immersive worlds. The Imperial Planet, for instance, showcases gardens and architecture inspired by Italian architect Carlo Scarpa, whose designs balance brutalist strength with delicate details a fitting aesthetic for the grandeur of the Imperial setting,” Anthony Whyte with The Movie Blog shares. “This juxtaposition of massive structures with refined elements not only enhances the storytelling but also offers inspiration for interior design, where combining bold architectural features with subtle, intricate details can create spaces that are both grand and inviting.”

Robert Kwalick, MFA, and executive director with Bantam Cinema & Arts Center further dives into the power of production design, specifically the uniqueness around ‘Dune: Part 2.’ He shares, “Effective production design requires that all visual elements, scenery, costumes, lighting, etc, live within the same universe and are unified in their impact. ‘Dune: Part Two ’ makes use of an internally consistent limited color palette which serves to create a very specific world that has a particular mood, tone, and feeling. While one would likely not use this same color palette as ‘Dune: Part Two’ in interior design, one would be well-served to make use of the principle of the “limited color palette” to create an internally consistent living space that achieves a desired result (stimulating, calming, whimsical, formal, etc).”

Kwalick continues by saying, “Many internal spaces are a hodgepodge of furnishings, decor, wall, and window treatments, resulting in a busy environment that lacks unity, while a carefully curated palette results in the perception of planning and thematic forethought. Like production designers who work in film, interior designers can make use of color to create an impactful and specific impression.”

Nickel Boys

Audience score: 75%

Critics score: 90%

Adapted from the acclaimed novel, “Nickel Boys” employs a restrained but deeply evocative aesthetic to tell its harrowing story. The film’s design choices — faded, sun-washed settings, period-accurate costuming, and deliberate framing — convey a sense of both nostalgia and unease, amplifying the emotional weight of the narrative. The muted, pastel-infused palette contrasts with the film’s heavy themes, emphasizing the innocence lost by its characters.

Anora

Audience score: 90%

Critics score: 94%

Capturing the energy of contemporary urban life, “Anora” takes a more grounded approach with its design. The film’s aesthetic leans into documentary-inspired realism, using handheld camerawork and natural lighting to bring its Brooklyn setting to life. Every detail, from costume choices to set dressing, contributes to the film’s raw, intimate feel, with desaturated tones reflecting the grit of city life.

The Substance

Audience score: 75%

Critics score: 89%

A psychological thriller with a surrealist edge, ‘The Substance’ plays with shadow and color to heighten its unsettling atmosphere. Innovative visual effects, eerie lighting choices, and bold production design help craft a world that blurs the line between reality and hallucination, making it one of the year’s most visually interesting films.

“Coralie Fargeat’s 2025 Best Picture nominee, ‘The Substance,’ features several striking scenes that showcase bold interior design. Horror fans may recognize visual parallels between the film’s dramatic hallway and public restroom sequences and Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 cult classic, ‘The Shining,’” Destiny King with What Sleeps Beneath explains.

“Both films employ deep red tones and meticulous composition, reflecting a resurgence of 1970s contemporary interior design. In particular, the hallway scene in “The Substance” draws viewers in with elongated Art Deco patterns that create a sense of depth and unease. Whether or not you’re a fan of the genre, the film’s design choices are undeniably mesmerizing, immersing audiences in its unsettling yet visually arresting world.”

I’m Still Here

Audience score: 98%

Critics score: 96%

This historical drama uses a mix of soft, sepia-toned visuals and stark, oppressive settings to depict the struggles of its protagonist. The contrast between intimate, warmly lit interiors and harsh, institutional spaces serves as a powerful visual metaphor for the story’s themes of resilience and identity.

What are your predictions when it comes to the 2025 Oscars Best Picture nominees?

The power of cinema and design

Films do more than entertain — they shape culture, influence trends, and subtly weave their aesthetics into everyday life. “We are used to seeing a big variety in the aesthetics of the Best Picture nominees, and this year’s nominees are no different,” Lars B. Frahm with  Awardstats.com explains.

“They explore several different kinds of homes. From the lavish LA apartment in ‘The Substance’ to “Conclave’s” minimalist living quarters in the Vatican to the fairytale dorm rooms in “Wicked,” and to downright living in caves in ‘Dune: Part Two.’ I would for one not mind waking up in the apartment from ‘The Substance.’ From the start of the film at least. And without the other inhabitants.”

The impact of film design extends far beyond the screen, influencing everything from color palettes to furniture choices. For instance, the lavish world of “Wicked” may inspire a resurgence of rich jewel tones and opulent textures, while the stark brutalism of “The Brutalist” could spark a renewed appreciation for minimalist, industrial spaces. Even subtler elements — like the warm, nostalgic glow of “A Complete Unknown” — can shape how we style our homes, drawing us toward vintage decor and soft, timeworn materials. Whether grand or understated, cinematic aesthetics often find their way into the way we design and experience our living spaces.

Bringing cinematic influence from the 2025 Oscars Best Picture nominees into our spaces

From intentional color palettes to striking compositions and rich textures, the visual storytelling in these films offers endless inspiration for interior design. As awards season unfolds and the predictions for the winners shift, it will be exciting to see which film’s design resonates most and how its aesthetic influence might translate into our living environments.

Author note: This story was initially published in early July of 2023, before the “Barbie” movie’s initial release date.

Think pink.

It was once an unassuming sleeper hit directed by Greta Gerwig (the mind behind the films “Little Women” and “Lady Bird”). However, because of some cleverly teased marketing and some timely escapism, now it’s the movie of the summer. And it isn’t even out yet.

“Barbie” is now receiving high praise from the lucky critics that have gotten to see it. More importantly, its public approval soars as social media is exploding with pink, flashing pictures of what has come to be known as “Barbiecore.” What started with runway couture fashions has trickled into home fashion, as home decor publications are starting to show off a variety of ’80s-esque vintage furniture and multiple shades of pink. Barbiecore became a cultural phenomenon, a feeling reflecting where we are this year and where we wish to be.

What is Barbiecore, how did such an unusual trend emerge and how can you recreate its glossy joie de vivre in your own home? Find out here, and find some pieces that will fit your fantastic new life in plastic.

Barbiecore defined

Barbiecore is seeing life through rose-colored sunglasses. It is the essence of pink, of opulence and happiness. Summer drives with the windows down in a shiny coupe. ’80s-inspired party houses that people in the 2020s only dream of spending the night in. Perfectly swirled strawberry ice cream and sparkly designer pumps.

Barbiecore is a feeling — an escapist dream, a sweet, pink cloud of cotton candy plastered onto the COVID-weary, austere reality. Or as Emily Huggard, an assistant professor of fashion communication at Parsons School of Design states, “People are really latching on to escapism and things that they know and feel safe with. When we think about this trend [Barbiecore], it’s pretty, it’s hot pink, it’s not too complex — I think people are craving a time when things felt less heavy.”

barbiecore home decor is unapologetically feminine, following fashion trends and everything that celebrates the modern day barbie aesthetic

How the Barbiecore trend is owning home decor

In fashion, this trend dominated the runway in 2022 via an all-pink Valentino fashion show. Since then, “dopamine dressing” has been popping up on social media, featuring showy, often bright designs that the pre-pandemic world might have deemed gaudy.

This same concept permeates all the home decor it touches too. Though everyone has their own personal take on the aesthetic that works for their home’s personality, the style features many high-contrast, high-gloss colors and textures — blended with fluffy, dreamy textiles in accents rugs and pillows. Meanwhile, the furniture often has vintage touches and bubbly, simple shapes that hearken back to happier times: You might even see some hearts, stars and glitter thrown into Barbiecore home decor for good measure. And don’t forget the color pink.

The barbie girl fashion trend is hyper feminine in the best way, mixing pastel pink and hot pink.

Barbiecore spans design styles and decades

Many designers are opting to mix the style to their liking with cottagecore, shabby-chic and even coastal grandmother. After all, Barbie’s versatility made her famous, as she’s had more careers than anyone else you’ve ever met.

Just as Barbie has been celebrated throughout the years, you’ll find Barbiecore inspiration in multiple aesthetics, spanning each decade since she arrived in 1959. Barbie represents all that feels fun, luxurious and light in every era. Whether it’s the economic prosperity and traditionalism of the ’50s; the bold modernism of the ’60s; the sparkly disco balls of the ’70s; the brash consumerism of the ’80s; the sophistication and social progress of the ’90s; the pop music craze of the ’00s; the eclectic, identity-challenged 2010s or the social consciousness and maximalism of the 2020s, there’s a version of Barbiecore for all of our homes, too.

Vintage and modern Barbie home decor

For example, if you love the geometric simplicity of the midcentury’s take on modern, opt for furniture with hairpin chair legs and pink upholstery. Capture the ’60s and ’70s with lucite furnishings because life in plastic is fantastic.

Live out your ’80s bubblegum dreams with glitter and crystalized accents galore. Find the ’90s aesthetic in floral wallpapers with pink accents, or go all out on early-aughts style with butterfly chairs, inflatable furnishings and textured walls.

If you don’t want to time-travel back that far, the 2010s and 2020s offer plenty of style varieties to try. After all, the 2010s gave us none other than Millennial pink, a more subdued take on Barbie’s signature hue. Rose gold finishings and chevron prints also dominated these years, both perfect for Barbiecore. The 2020s saw a resurgence in curvy furniture and maximalism, so if you’ve ever wanted to spring for something heart-shaped and over the top, do so now while it’s still on trend to also get it in pink.

Rococo Interior Design: Embracing Ornate Elegance https://rent.blog.convesio.cloud/rococo-interior-design/ https://rent.blog.convesio.cloud/rococo-interior-design/#respond Fri, 24 Jan 2025 16:52:06 +0000 https://www.rent.com/blog/?p=914622 Rococo interior design is making a comeback, blending ornate details, pastel hues, and luxurious textures with modern aesthetics for a timeless, whimsical look.

The post Rococo Interior Design: Embracing Ornate Elegance appeared first on The Rent. Blog : A Renter’s Guide for Tips & Advice.

The ornate and romantic world of Rococo interior design is experiencing a modern-day resurgence. Originally flourishing in 18th-century France, Rococo — or Late Baroque — is known for its exceptional detail, playful asymmetry, and pastel color palette. Today, designers and homeowners alike are rediscovering its charm, weaving elements of this historic style into contemporary spaces. Here’s why the Rococo revival is capturing imaginations and how you can bring a touch of this timeless aesthetic into your rental home in Franklin, TN, apartment in Charlotte, NC, or home in Atlanta, GA.

rococo interior design is timeless

What defines Rococo interior design?

Rococo design is characterized by its lightness, elegance, and decorative flair. Unlike the grandeur and heaviness of earlier Baroque styles, Rococo emphasizes refinement and whimsy. Key features include:

  • Intricate ornamentation: Curving shapes, floral motifs, and gilded accents.
  • Soft, pastel colors: Delicate shades of blue, pink, and green paired with creamy whites and gold.
  • Luxurious textures: Silks, velvets, and damasks.
  • Furniture with fluid lines: Chairs and tables feature curved legs and elaborate carvings.
  • Asymmetrical design: A hallmark of Rococo, asymmetry adds a dynamic and playful quality.

“Fluidity, asymmetry, and three-dimensional sculptural wonders come to mind upon imagining Rococo design. Rococo revival, as the name suggests, has had multiple resurgences throughout history and is perhaps in dire need and evermore relevant in today’s society,” Albert Suzuki with Artisan Antiques details. “With no shortage of ornateness and opulence, Rococo designs provide a stark contrast to modern-day minimalism and ‘fast-fashion’ consumerism with a distinguished sophistication of quality, artistry, and cultural heritage.

An interior adorned with antique Rococo ware immediately sets the tone, guaranteed to make a stunning and lasting impression on anyone who has the pleasure of experiencing the historically rich and romantic ambiance. Notwithstanding, we also believe that sometimes a single piece of Rococo ware can be extremely effective in juxtaposing and creating contrast within a modern interior – as purveyors of fine antique silverware and jewelry, some of our customers have come up with creative modern-day ideas of using shell shaped silver dishes with contemporary uses such as a jewelry tray, canape servers or even as a most stylish ashtray.”

Additionally, the rise of the coquette aesthetic, with its emphasis on romantic and feminine details, aligns beautifully with the charm and whimsy of Rococo design.

Why Rococo now?

In addition to Suzuki’s revival explanation, the resurgence of Rococo interior design speaks to a broader cultural shift toward maximalism and individuality in decor. “The resurgence of Rococo Revival aligns beautifully with the growing embrace of maximalism in home décor,” Susie Batsford with The Illustrarium emphasizes.

She continues, “After years of minimalist dominance, many are rediscovering the joy of ornamentation, decoration, and color. Rococo’s ornate curves, soft pastel hues, and richly gilded details invite us to create spaces that feel vibrant, uplifting, and full of personality. I love how this style offers a sense of escapism – bringing elements of whimsy and romance into our homes, where they can transport us to a world of artistry and beauty, away from the troubles of everyday life. Incorporating Rococo-inspired accents, like decorative mirrors, an ornate chandelier, or hand-painted delicate floral patterns such as Chinoiserie, allows us to embrace maximalism in a way that feels both timeless and deeply personal”.

As people seek to make their homes more expressive and unique, Rococo’s ornate and whimsical qualities offer a stark contrast to minimalist trends that have dominated in recent years. “Rococo Revival is making waves in modern interiors, tapping into the broader resurgence of romanticism seen across film, fashion, and home design,” Jordan Flitcroft with Flitcroft Interiors exclaims. “I believe the appeal lies in its ability to evoke emotion and storytelling through ornate details, pastel hues, and gilded finishes. For example, I love the look of a Rococo-style fireplace as a statement piece, grounding a space in timeless elegance while adding contrast with contemporary furniture or sculptural accents. This trend invites homeowners to embrace the whimsical and poetic aspects of design, adding depth and character to their interiors without losing a modern edge.”

What experts are saying about the Rococo Revival

“The resurgence of Rococo Revival seems to reflect a broader shift away from minimalism, as people look for more expressive and romantic design elements in their spaces. At the same time, digital platforms like Instagram and Pinterest amplify this trend, rewarding visually intricate designs that capture attention. Influencers showcasing Rococo-inspired décor create a feedback loop that makes this whimsical aesthetic increasingly desirable, blending personal preferences with the dynamics of modern digital culture.”

Marc Köhlbrugge, Room AI

“As a luxury eyewear designer, I’ve noticed a strong connection between the Rococo Revival in home décor and its influence on fashion. Clients are drawn to the ornate beauty of Rococo, from gilded accents and soft pastels in interiors to accessories that showcase intricate craftsmanship and timeless elegance. Just as Rococo-inspired eyewear elevates personal style, adding ornate mirrors or carved furniture to modern homes brings artistry and opulence into everyday life, blending classic design with contemporary living.”

CJ, Sires Eyewear

“We notice that people naturally associate the Rococo style with French influence. That’s where it originated: France. Today we witness a Rococo revival in the sense that customers love to find vintage French-inspired furniture pieces full of lines and curves. They are enchanted by elegant details and patterns based on flowers, vines, and shells.”

Francisco Pereira, White Tree Furniture

“Rococo Revival is making a stylish comeback in modern home decor, blending its opulent charm with contemporary sensibilities. Today, we see intricate floral motifs, gilded accents, and curved furniture reimagined in softer, more subtle tones, making them adaptable to current interiors. This trend celebrates craftsmanship and adds a touch of timeless elegance to spaces, whether it’s through statement mirrors, ornate lighting fixtures, or plush upholstery. By pairing these luxurious elements with minimalist backdrops, homeowners can strike a balance between historic grandeur and modern simplicity.
The result is a sophisticated, curated look that feels both rich in history and fresh in design. Also, the Rococo Revival is influencing home decor by bringing a sense of grandeur and artistry into modern spaces. Curved silhouettes, elaborate carvings, and gilded finishes are being blended with contemporary designs to create a unique fusion of old-world elegance and modern flair.”

Incorporating Rococo into modern spaces

While a full Rococo interior might feel overwhelming for most homes, incorporating elements of the style can create a balanced and elegant look. “Another age of elegance is upon us with the resurgence of Rococo influences in interior design. With the recent comeback of yellow gold, arrived a new emphasis on creating a sense of luxury in even the simplest space,” Monica Nyenhuis with 9 House explains.

“Integrating Rococo-inspired elements, like gilded mirrors, ornate furniture, pastels, florals, and curvaceous accessories can literally transform a room from basic to opulent. The rococo aesthetic is romantic, elegant, and tells a story. Therefore, using Rococo embellishments will truly make your home unique and set it apart from the rest.” Here are some tips for curating a Rococo-inspired interior:

Start small

Introduce Rococo through decorative accents such as mirrors with gilded frames, porcelain figurines, or intricate chandeliers. These pieces can serve as focal points without overpowering the room and help those new to design feel less overwhelmed.

Blend old and new

Pair Rococo-inspired furniture with contemporary pieces for a curated and eclectic feel. “At Barnebys, we’ve noticed a growing interest in Rococo items at auction, as collectors embrace this opulent style,” the team at Barnebys shares. “The pastel colors and gilded details of Rococo pieces can bring elegance to modern spaces. For a contemporary twist, pair a gilded Rococo mirror with minimalist furniture or a gold chandelier with pastel-colored walls. This creates a stunning focal point, blending old-world charm with modern simplicity.”

This renewed interest in Rococo’s elegance highlights its versatility, seamlessly blending antique sophistication with modern design — a sentiment echoed by experts in the design world. “Rococo Revival is making waves in modern home décor, offering a whimsical blend of opulence and charm that feels both timeless and fresh,” Jo with Objet D’Art Stuff explains.

“Incorporating ornate furniture with curvaceous silhouettes, pastel color palettes, gilded accents, and floral or shell-inspired motifs can add a romantic touch to contemporary spaces. To balance this lavish aesthetic, pair Rococo-inspired elements with sleek, minimalist furnishings or neutral backdrops, creating a harmonious interplay between old and new.”

Play with color

Embrace a pastel palette but add depth with contrasting colors or modern patterns. “With a world full of neutral/gray tones and featureless modern finishes, the uniqueness of historically-inspired color palettes and ornate flourishes in the home has the ability to uplift one’s spirit, fill a place with inspiring beauty, and connect us to the past,” Sara L., founder of Yore Finery details.

“During the historical Rococo era, romanticized and ethereal nature-themed motifs were quite popular in tandem with pastel colors like green, lilac, pink, yellow, and blue, accented with cream and gold… think antique silver or gold botanical accents, and of course romantic ribbons and ruffle trims.”

Focus on textures

Incorporate luxurious fabrics like velvet or silk for curtains, cushions, or upholstery. “Rococo Revival is far from a relic of the past; it’s a sophisticated choice that resonates with a range of styles, from Grandmillennial charm to traditional French country elegance,” Allison Cook, owner and CEO of CastleHome.co unveils. “This opulent look is particularly striking in bedrooms, where regal bedding set in Egyptian cotton or satin creates a luxurious yet welcoming atmosphere. To elevate your space, choose bedding with subtle hints of gold or ornate details like embroidery, ruffles, or lace. Complement it with elaborate furniture and rich drapery to craft a chic, cohesive sanctuary that exudes timeless elegance.”

Embrace ornamental art

Rococo art often features romantic and playful scenes. Look for reproductions of classic Rococo paintings or create a gallery wall with ornate frames to create a grandeur focal point.

Invest in quality pieces

To truly capture the essence of Rococo, consider investing in a few high-quality statement pieces. “For those historians looking for a touch of opulent luxury, a home decorated in the style of the Rococo Revival is an instant draw, particularly for hosts looking to stand out in the competitive AirBnB market,” Roisin Miller with Roabouttown shares.

“Its opulent curves, intricate details, and flair for dramatic elegance evoke a sense of luxury and escapism which is perfect for enthusing modern travelers looking for an Instagrammable stay. The style’s blend of historic charm with modern comforts means hosts cannot skimp on budget – they need to invest in the decor to ensure that it gives the desired experience and that guests feel as if they have stepped into a storybook retreat.”

Bringing Rococo interior design into the modern era

The revival of Rococo interior design proves that elegance and romance are timeless themes. “After two decades of minimalism in home decor which borders office-like perfection, people have started yearning for features and familiarity,” Tulika Bhatnagar, founder of Parrot and Lily explains.”History has once again become relevant and the classics are being celebrated again. Rococo has resurged because it takes to an era where things were done by the heart.”

By thoughtfully incorporating elements of Rococo, you can create a space that comes from the heart and is a true celebration of beauty and creativity. Whether you’re drawn to gilded details, a pastel palette, or luxurious textures, Rococo offers endless opportunities to express your personal style. Embrace the romance of the 18th century and make your home your own.

After a highly anticipated waiting period, Pantone has revealed its 2025 Color of the Year as Mocha Mousse. This warm, earthy tone is poised to take center stage in design and decor. But what makes Mocha Mousse so special, and how can you incorporate it into your home? Whether you’re searching for a home in Nashville, looking to revamp a rental home in New Orleans, or finding a Raleigh, NC apartment to make your own, this guide to incorporating Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year, Mocha Mousse, has everything you need. With expert insights and tips, you’ll learn how to create an inviting atmosphere that blends timeless elegance with versatile design.

What is Mocha Mousse?

Mocha Mousse is a soft, muted brown with undertones of gray and taupe. Its versatility lies in its neutrality, offering a perfect balance between warm and cool tones. This color evokes a sense of coziness and sophistication, making it a natural choice for creating comforting yet contemporary environments.

“Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year, Mocha Mousse, is one of the most versatile to date,” Ryan Shapiro with Ryan Shapiro Photography explains. “With its warm, distinct earth-tone hue, it offers renters and homeowners a distinct color profile that not only can stand on its own but provides a myriad of complementary colors to enhance its presence in spaces — big or small.

As minimalism and neutral palettes are on the way out in 2025 in favor of more inviting, warm color tones, Mocha Mousse presents a delectable ‘visual’ stimulus to draw the eye to a more calming place. Think biophilic and the importance of bringing the outside in and feeling one with nature. Mocha often instills a sense of timelessness, luxury, and calmness,” Shapiro concludes.

In color theory, brown shades like Mocha Mousse are associated with stability, reliability, and grounded energy. The gray undertones add a modern touch, preventing the hue from feeling too traditional or heavy. As a result, Mocha Mousse fits seamlessly into a variety of design styles, from minimalist to maximalist, rustic to urban.

Why Mocha Mousse matters in 2025

Pantone’s selection of Mocha Mousse reflects broader trends in design and culture. In a world increasingly focused on mindfulness and sustainability, this earthy tone speaks to our desire for calm and connection. It’s a reminder to slow down, appreciate nature’s beauty, and find serenity in simplicity.

It brings a soft, warm comfort to any space such as bathrooms, home offices, and kitchen cabinets. Paired with creamy whites such as Cannoli Cream, or other warm colors, such as olive green or peach, this creates a peaceful atmosphere. Mocha would also soften and add warmth to high ceilings and darker rooms.”

– Ellyn Baillio, CID with Ellyn B Designs.

“Mocha Mousse is the perfect match for the 2025 color of the year. Its richness tells the story of where color is taking back the center stage in home design where we will see warmth and depth, creating spaces that feel inviting and sophisticated.”

– Sarah Grendahl, Creative Interior Designer with Grendahl Design Co.

How to use Mocha Mousse in your home

The beauty of Mocha Mousse lies in its adaptability. Here are some inspired ways to incorporate this color into your home:

1. Paint with purpose

For a bold statement, consider painting an accent wall or an entire room in Mocha Mousse. It pairs beautifully with crisp whites, muted greens, and deep blues, creating a harmonious and balanced palette. This color is particularly well-suited for bedrooms and living rooms, where its calming qualities can shine.

2. Furniture and upholstery

Introduce the rich color of Mocha Mousse through furniture pieces like sofas, armchairs, or ottomans. Its neutral tone makes it an excellent choice for upholstered items that will anchor your space without overwhelming it. Pair these pieces with textured throws or patterned cushions for added depth.

3. Textiles and accessories

If you’re not ready to commit to a large-scale use of Mocha Mousse, start small with textiles and accessories. Think of area rugs, curtains, or bedding in this soothing shade. “Adding a quilt, quilted wall hanging, and pillow covers to your home is a perfect way to incorporate the warmth of Mocha Mousse into your decor,” Annelies Deruyter of Brown Bird Designs explains. “These items are not only stylish but also practical—they’re lightweight, foldable, and easy to store.

“Use plush fabrics like velvet or wool in black and brown to enhance the moodiness,” shares Kristen Crowder, Principal Designer with KBC Designs. The rich textures create a tactile experience that deepens the warmth and sophistication of Mocha Mousse.

4. Kitchen and dining areas

Mocha Mousse is a fantastic choice for kitchens and dining rooms. Incorporate it through cabinetry, backsplashes, or even dishware. “Mocha Mousse can easily add a touch of warmth to their living spaces,” Dan Bochichio with Bocain Designs details. “This color works beautifully as an accent wall and can create a grounded and inviting feeling. In kitchens or dining areas, Mocha Mousse can complement natural wood tones or modern black accents, creating a space that feels both stylish and welcoming.”

Molly O’Rourke with Molly + Maeve Design Studio echoes the sentiment that Mocha Mousse pairs perfectly with a kitchen space. “We love a creamy brown, like Pantone’s Mocha Mousse, to use in a variety of spaces. We are especially loving Mocha Mouse for kitchen cabinets, trim, and doors in a higher sheen paint. Its rich, earthy tone pairs beautifully with creams, terracotta, and mustard tones to enhance its natural warmth.”

5. Entryway areas

Those who love to create stunning entryways shouldn’t overlook utilizing Mocha Mousse. “Adding the Mocha Mousse color at the main entrance foyer can provide for an attractive, elegant twist whether as regular paint or even adding in-depth texture by applying it in colored Venetian plaster. This can also add a vintage welcome to any home,” recommends Julio Durazo with Old Pueblo Stucco. Its warm undertones complement wood finishes and metal accents, creating a space that feels both inviting and refined.

5. Art and decor

Bring in Mocha Mousse through artwork, vases, or other decorative objects. This is an easy way to experiment with the color without making permanent changes. Look for pieces that combine Mocha Mousse with complementary colors for a cohesive look.

6. Lighting

Lighting can enhance Mocha Mousse’s warmth and depth. Kristen Crowder with KBC Designs recommends, “Opting for soft, warm lighting to complement the darker colors.” Accent lighting, like spotlights or LED strips, can highlight Mocha Mousse walls or furniture, adding depth. For kitchens or workspaces, task lighting like under-cabinet lights will complement its earthy tones, while sheer curtains can help natural light bring out its softer hues.

Pairing Mocha Mousse with other colors

To maximize its impact, pair Mocha Mousse with the right complementary shades. Here are some ideas:

  • Earthy greens: Sage, olive, and moss greens create a nature-inspired palette that’s both soothing and contemporary.
  • Soft pastels and complimentary hues: “Mocha mousse is a versatile hue,” Hilary Hays Greenhalgh with Little Green House Interiors Co. explains. “I would pair the color with patterned wallpaper or coordinating paint color with a complimentary hue, such as a purple-based brown, like a beet color, a deep yellow, or a rose pink.”
  • Bold contrasts: Deep navy, charcoal gray, and even black provide a striking contrast, adding a touch of drama.
  • Metals: “Mocha Mousse, elevates trending “warm tones” to a delicious, comforting, and surprisingly versatile peak. Equally at home in a kitchen, as it is in a primary suite, the rich, pinky-brown tone can be earthy and grounded when paired with soft blues, greens, plums, and golds. Or it can take a completely glamourous, (but equally lovely), turn alongside soft neutrals and luxurious metals,” shares Leah Dunne with Kate Roos Design.

What makes the color Mocha Mousse so easy to utilize in design?

When it comes to pairing colors, mixing textures, and crafting a cohesive aesthetic, Mocha Mousse lays the perfect foundation for effortless design. “We have seen a decline in the bright white walls paired with cool grays and blues and have been seeing warmer beiges and taupes for neutral wall colors along with earth tones,” Kelley Kolettis with Kelley Kolettis Designs explains.

She continues: “Mocha Mousse is continuing the trend into a warmer neutral that will pair well with so many styles: a light and airy color scheme of creams and taupes, a more contrasting color scheme with black and white, a nature-inspired color scheme with navy blue and sage green, or a more traditional color scheme with burgundy and chocolate brown. So many possibilities to incorporate the 2025 color of the year.”

When it comes to pairing shades, nothing is off-limits with this rich neutral. “What a welcoming shade Pantone has gifted us with for the 2025 color of the year,” Amy Ellzey with Colour Me Beautiful – LA exclaims.

“Comforting our public and private spaces in our home with this warm muted color will make us feel surrounded by a sympathetic hug. If you’re seeking the solace of natural neutral shades in your home, combine ‘Mocha Mousse’ with warm tone-on-tone shades of beige, espresso, and cream. But, if you’re inspired by the energy of ‘color popping’, why not accent with cobalt blue, lime green, and hot pink? Either way, you are going to love updating your own personal retreat with this modern cozy earthy tone.”

Aside from its versatility, this color can be used in a range of designs. Whether you’re a strong minimalist with a love for simple color schemes and clean lines or a staunch maximalist who lives for vibrant and bold approaches to design, this color is for everyone.

“Mocha Mousse can be used all over a space on the walls or large furniture pieces to create a grounding effect and add depth and warmth to the interiors, pair it with soft creams for a minimalist vibe,” explains Studio Em Interiors. “If you are looking for something more dramatic (which I love), it can be used as more of an accent to the space in furnishings and accessories while pairing it with bold jewel tones on the walls and main furnishings, like emerald or sapphire to give the space a luxurious and dramatic feel. It is a perfect color to bring the outdoors in and incorporate it with textured fabrics, natural wood, and earthy elements to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere whether you choose to be more minimalist or go bold and dramatic. “

Bringing the color Mocha Mousse to life

The color, Mocha Mousse, is more than just a color; it’s a statement about where design is headed in 2025. Its versatility and warmth make it an ideal choice for any home, whether you’re redecorating a single room or embarking on a complete makeover. By embracing this trend, you’ll not only stay ahead of the curve but also create spaces that feel timeless and inviting.

As 2025 approaches, the design world is alive with speculation about what’s in, what’s out, and how to transform spaces with fresh ideas. Maybe you’re planning a full redesign or perhaps leaning more toward making small updates. Regardless, the trends this year promise a blend of creativity, bold choices, and timeless appeal. Whether you’re buying a home in Charlotte, considering a rental in San Francisco, or renting an apartment in Charleston, this guide to 2025 interior design trends has everything you need to know. With expert insights and tips, you’ll learn how to curate a space that blends timeless elegance with bold, emerging styles, creating a home that reflects both personality and sustainability.

Fading styles: What’s losing steam

Minimalism, with its stark simplicity and monochromatic palettes, is taking a back seat in favor of more layered, expressive spaces. The once-dominant all-white kitchens and neutral-heavy interiors are evolving, as homeowners and renters crave environments that feel more personal and inviting.

“As we enter 2025 interior design trends, the all-white, ultra-minimalist interiors that once reigned supreme are fading, replaced by bold, expressive spaces,” Dhwani Patel with Dhwani Patel Designs reinforces. “Say goodbye to sterile, colorless rooms; the future is all about rich, earthy tones, layered textures, and personal expression. Expect maximalist decor that celebrates individuality with statement pieces, vibrant accents, and eclectic patterns. This year’s design is less about perfection and more about creating warm, authentic spaces that tell a story.”

Emerging aesthetics: What’s gaining momentum

In 2025’s interiors, the lines between nature and technology blur further, giving rise to a new wave of biophilic futurism. This style blends organic materials like wood, stone, and greenery with innovative, tech-forward designs. Spaces are increasingly designed to feel both smart and serene.

“This year we can anticipate an increase in the use of biophilic design elements as homeowners seek to deepen their relationship with nature in their living spaces,” Tara Murney with Alchemy Design & Reno emphasizes. “This trend will incorporate an abundance of plant life into furniture and wall structures, as well as the use of large, panoramic windows and indoor water features, to seamlessly integrate the outdoors with the indoors.

Homeowners will also embrace the use of natural materials, such as terracotta, wood, and stone, which not only provide warmth and texture but also promote sustainable practices. We predict there will be a resurgence of bold, geometric patterns used in unexpected ways, such as on ceilings or within transitional spaces, to create dynamic, eye-catching interiors; this will be the return of geometric designs in our beloved homes.”

Balancing nature and modernity in 2025’s interior designs

This evolution reflects a growing desire for interiors that feel connected to the natural world while maintaining modern sophistication. As homeowners move away from rigid, sterile designs, they’re embracing more organic, layered approaches that blend nature’s beauty with functional, stylish elements.

“Modern homes are shifting towards creating spaces that balance aesthetics with functionality. While ultra-modern, monochromatic looks may fade next year, this trend invites warmth and personality without overwhelming the eye,” explains Cristina Arlia with Buy Wall Art.

“Consider using wall art to introduce subtle contrasts, such as pairing soft, botanical, and nature-inspired landscape prints with wooden frames or blending muted colors with bold, geometric patterns. This balanced, inviting aesthetic can transform any room into a calm, tranquil space, combining elegance with comfort. We cater to these emerging trends by offering a diverse range of high-quality wall art that incorporates these key elements, helping you create personal and meaningful spaces.”

Color and pattern: Embracing bold choices

This year’s color palettes are anything but shy. Deep, saturated tones — think emerald green, aubergine, and terracotta — set the stage for cozy yet dynamic spaces. Vibrant accents in colors like saffron yellow or cobalt blue add unexpected pops of energy.

“Recent design trends have shifted from gray and white to more neutral tones like terracotta, warm beige, and olive green,” Karmon Baker with Karmon Baker Interiors details. “These tones have gained popularity for their calming and grounded appeal. This movement reflects a cultural desire for sustainability, organic materials, and a deeper connection to nature in interiors.”

As Baker noted, grays and whites are fading quickly as we head into the new year. “We are predicting a departure from neutral grays, creams, and whites and heading into bold saturated colors, like deep reds, blues, and greens,” the team at Greer Design Co. shares. “These intense rich colors will shift design styles to a cozy, lived-in feel with many personal and vintage touches like family heirlooms or one-of-a-kind antique store finds. We are excited to see unique, delicate, and thoughtful details added to every space.”

This shift not only highlights a preference for spaces that feel more inviting and lived-in but also signals a broader move toward authenticity and intentionality in design.

“In 2025, it’s all about ditching the drab and embracing the fab. Cool grays are stepping aside for cozy, earthy tones that warm up your space,” Lindsey Parsa with Marlowe Furnishings shares. “Forget flimsy, fast furniture—quality, sustainable pieces are here to last and make a statement. And those stark white kitchens? They’re getting a glow-up with rich wood tones and playful pops of color”.

Angela with Vita Lucia Design Studio echoes the sentiment that colors will be the main character of 2025. “Design trends for 2025 are steeped heavily in rich, warm neutrals, mixed metals, and pared-back maximalism. Furniture and accessories with lots of texture will continue to be important in 2025, along with a focus on sustainable furniture,” Angela further predicts.

Textures and layering: Adding depth and dimension

In 2025’s interior design trends, texture will take the spotlight as designers focus on the power of tactile elements to craft spaces that are both dynamic and inviting. The trend of mixing patterns, materials, and colors will continue to gain momentum, but the key to mastering this layered approach lies in achieving balance and cohesion. When done thoughtfully, these diverse elements come together to create a harmonious blend, allowing visual variety to thrive without overwhelming the space.

“I’m thrilled to be seeing warm neutrals paired with rich colors,” Christine Ortiz with Oh! Designs Interiors, Inc. explains. “Patterns are being mixed and layered to create an abundance of interest. Saturation is a word I would use for what I am seeing. It’s a curated and balanced approach to maximalism and I’m all for it.” Combining these elements is a timeless design tool that allows you to express creativity while maintaining balance.

“I am looking forward to textures taking center stage in interior design plans for 2025, particularly those featuring jewel tone colors,” Vanessa with Style My Abode shares. “Textures add depth and visual interest to our living spaces. The layering of various textures, including those adorned with tassels, fringe, and embroidery, is poised to become a significant trend. Simple methods to incorporate textures into your own home include the use of pillows in various sizes, throws, area rugs, and window treatments.”

This noticeable shift towards creating spaces that feel both cozy and refined, with textures playing a major role in achieving this balance, is centered on comfort. By combining thoughtful design and tactile elements, homeowners and renters are making their spaces not just visually appealing but also comfortable and inviting.

“Homeowners are embracing warm, organic materials and layered, natural textures that create inviting, livable spaces as we head into 2025. “At OASIS STAGING + DESIGN, our signature modern coastal style reflects this trend, blending soft neutrals, breezy blues, and sandy tones inspired by Hawaii’s natural beauty,” the team shares. “For a fresh update, we recommend pairing modern furnishings with vintage accents to add depth and character, keeping the focus on authenticity and sustainability.”

Timeless principles: Balancing form and function

While trends evolve, some principles endure, and that’s still the case with 2025 interior design. Spaces that prioritize functionality and comfort will always feel relevant. As Angela and Lindsey predicted earlier, multi-functional furniture and adaptable layouts remain must-haves in the coming year. From modular seating to hidden workspaces, designs are shifting to fit the needs of modern life while remaining sustainable.

“In 2025, overly polished, hyper-modern aesthetics and fast, mass-produced decor will continue to fall out of favor as people seek more personal, storied interiors rooted in sustainability,” Artur Rostami with Goma Design Studio explains. “Styles like ultra-minimalism and monochrome schemes will fade as homeowners gravitate toward layered, organic spaces that feel both luxurious and lived-in.

Industrial-style decor, with its stark, mechanical look, will also decline, replaced by softer, handmade materials like eco-clay, textured linens, and crafted wood. Sustainability will be at the core of design, with a preference for pieces that are hand-crafted, ethically sourced, and made to last — embracing the idea that each item tells a story, adds warmth, and honors the beauty of natural imperfection,” Rostami predicts.

This movement signals a shift away from impersonal, mass-produced items, prioritizing craftsmanship and sustainability instead. Homeowners and renters alike are increasingly seeking pieces that are not only functional but also carry a story, adding depth and character to their spaces. The result is a more intentional, thoughtful approach to design, where the focus is on longevity, quality, and the beauty of natural imperfections.

“Into the next year, as soft curves and organic shapes dominate interior design, metal accents are also evolving to align with this shift. Hard, glossy metals are giving way to matte, brushed, and natural textured finishes. Warm metals like brass and bronze are gaining popularity, seamlessly blending with natural materials such as wood and stone to create a balanced and sophisticated aesthetic,” Aydan Cayli with Balasagun Table Legs details. “From furniture legs to lighting fixtures and decorative accessories, metal details not only enhance the sustainable design approach but also add a touch of modern elegance to spaces.’’

Expanding your living space: The rise of outdoor extensions

Outdoor living spaces are no longer just a bonus—they’ve become true extensions of the home. Patios, balconies, and gardens are transforming into fully functional areas that mirror the comforts of indoor spaces.

Weather-resistant furniture, fire pits, and even fully equipped outdoor kitchens are becoming must-haves, while vertical gardens and natural landscaping create lush, inviting retreats year-round. We will see this emphasis extend indoors as well.

Ready to embrace 2025’s interior design predictions? Start small with bold accents, experiment with layering textures and patterns, and explore ways to add functionality throughout the home.

Remember, the best designs are the ones that reflect your personality and adapt to your lifestyle. “If we can give only one piece of advice it is this — design your home for your current lifestyle,” shares Terri Schmitt with Threshold Design Group, LLC. “What we require from a home, shifts as we go through the various stages of life.  Dialing in on what you need in the here and now will result in a space that is functional.  When things are functional, stress is reduced — after all, who needs more stress?”

This is your year to embrace bold changes and make your space a true reflection of you, where every element feels intentional and inspired.
