Kansas City is known as the home of great barbecue, jazz and the Super Bowl champs! You probably know those few Kansas City facts by now — or should.
But Kansas Citians know things that outsiders can only dream about, whether you live in Westport or hail from Gladstone. Whether you’re a Union Station kind of person or prefer the bright lights of Country Club Plaza, Kansas City is the place to be.
Kansas City facts that real locals know to be true
1. Don’t let the fools across the state line fool you, we’re the real Kansas City.
2. Texas and North Carolina, thanks for playing. Everyone knows the best barbecue is in Kansas City. Especially, at Q39.
3. The neat thing about being a Royals fan is that every 30 years we play for a World Series ring. The rest of the time, there’s ample parking at Kauffman.
4. The best part of being a Chiefs fan is that every 50 years you wake up a Super Bowl champion. The rest of the time, Arrowhead gets to be the loudest stadium in the National Football League.
5. Enjoy a cup of java at The Roasterie and wait for your flight number to be called.
6. Thank goodness for Hallmark and Christopher Elbow Chocolates when you tick off your significant other.
7. Forget museums. If you want to see real art, check out the alleys in Crossroads.
8. The Iron Bowl and The Game are cute, but The Border War is a real college football rivalry.
9. St. Louis can drink all the Budweiser it wants, we’ll kick back with our Boulevard.
10. Where do we find the badminton rackets for those birdies at Nelson-Atkins?
11. Did you know that if you put book titles on a parking garage, people mistake it for a library?
12. Don’t tell people in Omaha, but we think our zoo is slightly above average.
13. The NBA may not like us, but college basketball teams love to play at the Sprint Center and fans love the College Basketball Experience.
14. For a good time, grab a burger at Town Topic at 2 a.m. The views are amazing!
15. Suburbanites are scared of us. They need to be home by 9 p.m. We’re just getting started at the Power and Light District.
16. Pay your respects at the World War I Museum. Then, climb the memorial and take in the views of Kansas City.
17. Only out of towners say KC. Locals know it as KCMO (or KCK across the river).
18. Would you believe there are no payphones at the Sprint Center?
19. With all these water fountains around town, it’s no wonder we call ourselves the City of Fountains.
20. The song may suggest standing on the corner of 12th and Vine, but if you’re “…going to Kansas City,” check out 18th and Vine for a jazzy good time.
21. Kasey the Kangaroo is the best college mascot in the country. There’s no debate.
22. We have a giant museum dedicated to miniatures.
23. When you move here, prepare to worship George Brett, Buck O’Neill and Len Dawson. Oh, and Patrick Mahomes.
24. If you’re in search for a grinder, your journey pretty much always ends at Grinders Pizza for the meatball sandwich.
25. That thing that resembles a sea shell is actually the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.
26. Don’t believe anyone who tells you that you’ll need a passport to visit Worlds of Fun.
27. Holy Bugs Bunny! Can you imagine we were almost called Rabbitville? How ’bout Possum Trot?
28. If it weren’t for Country Club Plaza opening in 1923, shopping centers may never have been invented. So, now we know who’s to blame.
29. Other cities can keep their subways, we like our rides above ground. Even if the streetcar not named Desire only takes you around downtown.
30. Forget your farmers market, ours is open year-round. And we even gave City Market a cooler name.
